View Full Version : Bonefish brain teaser

Matt Flynn

Real story. My father was bonefishing in Florida a few years ago out of a lodge. The day trips are guided. Each pair of fishermen go with a guide, who stands behind them on a 3 foot platform poling the boat and spotting bonefish. Bonefish are nearly white, and the flats they frequent are white sand. It is very hard to see one directly. So, the guides look for shadows cast by the fish, then call out the locations for you to cast to. If you catch five bonefish, you've had an excellent day.

One day it was overcast and gray. Of the 13 guides, not one saw a bonefish. Only one fisherman caught any. He caught eight, all of which he spotted himself.

What was his profession?

He was not a pro fisherman, a bonefish guide, a sunglasses salesman or any of that. His profession was uniquely suited for spotting bonefish. Not a golf cameraman, but that's the best guess so far.

Matt Flynn,

I think we need a hint.

As an aside, I tried to cheat and googled for 'bonefish riddle' and found nothing... so if this has a dumb answer you will owe me 22 minutes of my life back.

ok here's a hint:

it's not an internet puzzle. real event. the fisherman involved had a profession that made him particularly good at spotting shadows - in fact much better than the guides who did it for a living.
