Just started playing $109s. Two bubble HHs for dissection.

I started playing the 11s about 5 months ago, eventually jumped to the 22s, then quickly to the 55s, and now I've decided to try my hand at a few 109s.

At the lower levels, I find that villains aren't generally skilled enough to realize they shouldn't be calling my pushes with marginal hands when we are on the bubble. After an insightful post by Newt_Buggs (I think) I made some adjustments to my bubble play at the 22s and 55s, that seemed to work like magic. (I basically just tightened up my pushing requirements a little, so that I had at least *some* chance if/when I was called.)

That said, I want to make sure that I am properly adjusting my bubble play for the better opponents at the 109s. (There were 3 other 2+2ers at one of my tables last night. Ugh.)

I would love it if some of the 109 regulars could take a look at these two bubble HHs and tell me if they look healthy?:

2359724064 - I don't like pushing UTG with weak aces, especially into a much bigger stack in the BB. The reason is that so much of your opponents call range dominates you. I would much rather push a hand like:
2359471469 - Look at the stack sizes. Very tough for anyone to call here, and you're almost never dominated.
2359475554 - Bad beat, sux.

I would probably call the button allin with KJ, and would almost certainly call it with A9. His range is very wide here, and I am fairly certain you are ahead of it -- the only problem, I assume, is calling an allin on the bubble. I would do an ICM calc but I'm at work and don't have the address handy. But my gut tells me that it is a call, especially with the A9.

Is it really? Did you look at the surrounding hands? He really hasn't gotten out of line at all. This is a tough spot, but I find a fold here.

2359458110 - K7s UTG - I think this has to be a push. But I guess with the blinds having just gone up people may see it as a desperation move, I dunno.

2359463821 - 75o UTG+1 - Again, borderline, case can be made for a push because of your huge FE

2359467541 - Ugh, A9o, probably not quite good enough to call with. But must be close. I however would also fold it.

2359471469 - UTG+1 76o - I think this is a push because the blinds are about to go up, as well as the big FE you have.

2359472791 - UTG T3o - I wouldn't push this, as you also didn't, as you're UTG and blinds have just gone up, more likely that someone will "look you up".

i still call the A9. I put his range at somewhere around 55+, Ax, KT+, QT+, and SCs down to T9 or so. Like I said, no ICM, but intuitively we seem to be ahead of that range. Not to mention the fact that if we're behind, we can always suckout, which is always fun.

I think this is a vestige of the lower level mentality.

I sometimes pass on +EV pushes in early bubble play because I am afraid people will loosen up their calling ranges, which is a disaster.

I tend to overthink things, so I should probably just STFU and push.

On a side- It could be in my head, but I think I can already discern a marked difference in the play between the 55s and the 109s.

You also need to differentiate the types of opponents that are on the bubble with you. There are some who are only going to call with TT+ or AK and some who are going to call with any king, any two broadways, etc. Recognizing the people that are going to call with crap is very important.

I was just going to tell you that your wide calling range probably was a big leak in your game, but then I ran the ICM calc:

Hand 2: 50.2109 % [ 00.46 00.05 ] { As9d }

$EV fold: 0.2081
$EV call/win: 0.3549
$EV call/lose: 0.0687

I still think it is a mistake to make this call as 50% of the time you will lose your chances to make the +$EV situations that will arise in the next few hands amd I guess those will be worth more than the 0.0039 you gain by this call.

despite feeling somewhat vindicated by ICM telling me its at least a marginal call, given my pushing range (which may or may not be correct), I think you may still be correct in thinking its a leak.

FWIW (and it's not worth much), I don't do it to "look people up" -- I do it because I think that I play much better with a proportionally larger stack, especially short handed, and I want to get there. On the other hand, it probably isn't worth busting on the bubble with marginal calls.

Against this range, SGA says it's close enough that folding and calling are both reasonable.

Against 22+,A2s+,A3o+,KTs+,KJo+,QJs, it's a (close) fold.
