My main use would be long drives from work/school/home up to 5 hours. I've have XM radio and a few cd's (which I always lose). Other uses is random times when I just want to chill to some Dave or something. Should I get an Ipod or not? List all PROS and CONS.

CON: YOu could get one of these (http://eng.iaudio.com/product/product_M3.php) or one of these (http://eng.iaudio.com/product/product_X5_feature.php) instead.

If you "always" lose your CDs that cost 15 bucks a pop would you want to get a similarly small item that costs twenty times as much to haul around all the time?

Don't know the specifics but you might want to research other MP3 players other than IPOD. I have heard there are MP3 players that are just as good or better out there but the marketing for IPOD is so good it is what people always think of first/as the hippest.

I don't know - google something and figure it out for yourself. I'm not going to shop for you. Plus, it depends on which one you want and how big a hard drive you want. Also, the M3 comes in a variant with an extra-long battery (30! hours play time instead of 14). All I can say is they have them at Amazon, but when I bought mine, the best price was at newegg.com. You can probably figure on something between $250 and $350.

I've got a second gen ipod, it kinda pisses me off. If I had it to do over, I'd get a different brand, probably a creative zen. Other brands generally have better prices / battery life. I also prefer the user interface on the zen (which a buddy of mine has and have been able to use).

Mp3 players are this [censored] though, get one. Just take a little time exploring your options.

Buy a 1gb shuffle for $150 - 8ish hours of music. Small, lightweight and you won't be pissed if you don't use it. The ipods with the hard drives tend to break if you drop them. I use mine primarily when I fly/play poker/want to ignore people.

My experience with it was not so good. The software is awful and doesn't work half the time. I also had technical issues soon after the warranty expired and got no answer to my several attempts at correspondence.

that x5 is teh hotness, but i don't think in this day and age 20 gigs is "super huge" for a portable player.

i have a 20 gig rio karma, and i know you can buy bigger hard drives that are made for laptops, crack the karma open, and swap drives. i haven't done it though. maybe the same is possible for the x5.

I know. They stopped making the 40GB M3 because nobody was buying it - they were only buying 20GBs (exept for me)... I can't believe the biggest x5 is 30GB.

I got a 20 gig Ipod through that free ipod online website. I won't post the link b/c people generally think it is spam. Regardless, its well documented to be legit now and I that's how I got my iPod. My car is new and the stock radio didn't have proper input to hook up my iPod so I had to use an ICElink to do it through the back but the sound quality is great. I set up my playlists and just plug it in to my car when I get in and unplug it and take it with me when I get out. Its great to not have to deal with CD's in the car and I can control the iPod through my steering wheel radio controls.
20 gigs is a ridiculous amount of space for music but you can always fill the rest of it with porn or something. I have a friend with the Dell Mp3 player and a friend with the Creative deal. I would take my iPod over either of them, especially for the price I got it for.

If you decide to get a Ipod. I suggest you wait til the 5th Generation comes out. It will come out in the next months or so. Just thought I'd give you the heads up. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

yes... *if* you have 128bit mp3 files. If you prefer to rip your music at a listenable mp3 bit rate (or flac format) 20gig is less than sufficient for anyone with a CD collection of any reasonable size.

Pat,

Have you personally used the X5? From what I've read, the lack of acceleration on the joystick is a huge pain in teh ass for scrolling through large collections. Also, the video is supposed to be barely watchable, at best.

Im not quite sure, cuz apple is always mum on the new stuff they are putting out. There should be nice upgrades from the 4th gen. cuz they always do something different, as u can see from the 3rd to 4th gen. Im also waiting for the 5th gen. I have a 2nd gen. Ipod and its old. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I am sure ipod lovers will flame this but, I bought a Dell DJ last year and have been extremly happy with it so far. I don't know what is different from it than the ipod, besides the DJ was $50 bucks cheaper, and the software for the computer is not as good.

You should really buy a nice MP3 player though, I am so very happy that I ended up buying one, it is so worth the money I spent on it.

I can get a student discount on the Ipod, 20Gig and an Itrip for $303 + tax, about a $30 discount. The thing about the dell that I want to know is how hard it is to scroll through the songs???

I haven't personally used the X5, but am very pleased with the M3 and expect the same quality from the X5. I haven't heard of the issues you speak of. If there's an issue with the scroll speed on the joystick, I'd imagine that'd be easily fixed in a firmware upgrade and they're generally pretty responsive to user requests. Also, I thought the video resolution was better than the iPod's (don't quote me on that one, though). At this stage though, to be honest, I'm not really even interested much in the video-type players, because I expect these early generation video players to be somewhat marginal in video quality and I just don't go for that stuff anyway. I'd go to the iaudio or other knowledgeable messageboards and dig it up for myself if I were you and interested in getting one of these. Sorry I can't answer your question with any more authority than that.

Here is CNET's (http://cnet.search.com/search?chkpt=astg.cnet.fd.search.cnet&q=iaudio+x5& tag=srch) coverage of the X5. They generally think very highly of all of iAudio's products.
