I'd say GNR comes in at a solid #286 on the all-time band-list.

I was a HUGE GNFNR fan growing up. I still listen to their music all the time.

Best ever? I can't say that though. They had the potential to make music that evolved with the times, which is key to longevity. The Illusion albums were head and shoulders more impressive than Appetite was, it was a retarded business move to release both CDs at the same time though. They could have stayed on the map much longer had they released the albums three years apart. Nonetheless, the turmoil within the band that stifled the creative process and eventually broke them up probably kept them from being the type of band that could last 25 years. They'd probably still be going strong today...

To be considered the best band ever the band has to have withstood the test of time. Like the Rolling Stones, or say Metallica (although I detest their music) for example, flourishing for 20 + years in todays music industry is an astonishing feat.

Just my take

Take a look at some of the characteristics that define a great "band."

Great music. Check.
Charismatic/insane lead singer. Check.
Legendary partiers. Check.
Cool names. Check.
Meteoric rise to fame, followed by spontaneous flameout. Check.

Yeah, they're pretty up there on the list.

Thanks for that.

BTW, GNR was incredible, but they should have just stopped BEFORE "The Spaghetti Incident" and LONG BEFORE Axl Rose got fat, got hair plugs, lost the high end of his range, and fired everyone cool in the band so he could play with some asswipe with KFC on his head.

So, best ever? No. I'd have to give that to The Beatles. They never sucked for an entire year (not talking about their solo careers), and they never attempted some lame "comeback".

They had plenty of chances before he died, and they could have tried without him (see many other bands for generally crappy results). But the reason doesn't really matter. They just never attempted a comeback, so their relatively short history will always remain outstanding.

There is no doubt that Appetite is a classic album although I do think there are some weak tracks on it. Personally I dont think it was the best album of the year it came out Operation Mindcrime is still to me x amount years later a better album plus and justice came out around that time which also is a better album as a whole even if the production sucks bigtime.

There are many many many better bands before, during and after that GNR are not the best band ever.

But maybe I am biased when they came out it was glam against thrash and I much preferred slayer and testament over Poison, Great White, Cinderella and Motley Crue, although I didnt mind Skid Row until I heard the album.
