I am going to get some estimates from a couple of maid services this week. I keep strange hours and leave town a lot. I would like to be able to trust that the maid could let herself in and out without my being here, but I do have a lot of valuables and cash on hand in my house.

Any suggestions, other cleaning up after myself, on how to ensure I don't get ripped off? I was thinkinf of setting up a security camera from the inside aimed at the door and buying a bigger safe.

a safe or a lockbox might be your best answer

my dad has a maid, she helped herself to a few beers one time

well, she's no longer his maid....

other than that, i dont think he's had any concerns

Use a national chain like Molly Maid (thats what I use); nothing to worry about. I live in NYC and they come every other week and have all my keys. One of them found a hundred dollar bill under my bed and placed it on my nightstand.

Maids generally won't rob you (IMO) if you don't have anything super valuable, its too much risk, not enough reward.
