On a wednesday (i.e., tomorrow) what would you suggest the best time would be to drive from la to vegas, to avoid traffic?

No later than 10 am. Where in Los Angeles are you driving from?

Take the 2 up to the 134 to the 210 to the 15.

At 10:00, you'll have no problem taking the 10 east to the 15 either. You should be in Vegas 3 hours and 25 minutes or so after you leave.

This is correct. Much better than the 10. You can leave earlier than 10:00AM if you want, the traffic's going the other way.

Is it better traffic-wise, or is it a shorter distance (or both)?

I don't know about the distance, but traffic-wise it is much better.

Both, I think, depending on where you're starting.

No, it's Zzyzx. You can actually pronouce it.
Say it with me. Zizz - ix. Very good.
And yes, Mad Greek is good. Except now they've expanded a bit and no longer offer some of the essential traditional greek foods that they used to, like yogurt. Stop laughing.

It's going to be 113 tomorrow in Las Vegas and possibly hotter in the desert between L.A. and Vegas. That puts a lot of strain on your car. It's very common to see lots of cars broken down on the highway in the summer.
You should be absolutely sure that you have a car that can make the trip over the mountains. And, no matter what, have a phone and water in your car just in case you do have a problem.

When we traveled from TX to Vegas then the Rose Bowl we drove from Vegas to LA at 3am New Years day. Half way through the trip driving on I-15, we passed through a vegetative check point. Since it was 3am it was closed. What is that thing for anyways? I have never seen a random check stop like that on a basic freeway. What is its purpose?

I've done the drive from Las Vegas to Los Angeles dozens of times now at all times and I have never seen that checkpoint in use. Its existence confuses me. It's so far from the NV/CA border that it's unlikely to stop anything CA doesn't want inmported from being imported (whether it be animals, flora and fauna, vegetables or Mexicans).
I think it is for the fruit fly. They wouldn't let me take a banana once.
