View Full Version : 20s and 30s study group

Yo,

Starting study group for 20s and 30s to trade HH and talk shop...already got 3 people. Would be mostly through MSN and for PP. Preferably people with a solid ROI over a large sample (10%+).

Lemme know if anyone is interested...

We could talk on IRC, too. Pretty easy.

I'm down like a clown, charlie brown. I've been playing exclusively on pokerroom (i like the structure better, but its probably less fishy), but will probably switch back to party soon. Perhaps as soon as this starts.

Im in, I have been climbing back into SNGs as my bank roll booster of choice after trying to weather the MTT variance alone. I used to play 30$s, but have jumped back into 20+2s for the time being.

KennyBanya
07-12-2005, 04:18 PM
I am very interested in participating in this group. I just moved up to the 20s last week, but had a 19.5% ROI over 1000 10+1s.

Feel free to IM me to join in.

Thanks,

KennyBanya

I've mastered the art of 26 buyin downswings over 230 games. With no end in sight. So if anyone wants to learn how to do that...I'm your guy.

edit: I can spell "sight"

I'd be interested, I'm going to be moving over to empire soon but right now I'm playing on PokerStars

11t

I'm already a master at the 30 buyin downswing

I lost 15 buyins in 22 tournaments yesterday.

gildwulf
07-12-2005, 06:05 PM
OK...let me be more specific so I don't get another 20 PMs with the only text being "I'm interested"...

IF YOU ARE interested...give me your email and I will start a mass email list and send it out tomorrow...

The goal eventually is to
1) get everyone on an email list so we can plan and schedule things
2) introduce everyone
3) get everyone on some form of chat room (IM or MSN) so we can have actual conversations
4) start trading HH with players
5) possibly (in the distant future) pool together pokertracker data so we can avoid each other and pick out fish more easily...this one is obviously up for debate as people might think it is -EV (I don't think it's -EV if more 2+2ers avoid my table but whatev)
6) maybe eventually set up a weekly 1-table SNG at a site that allows this (or a NL25 game if no site does)

anyway, so respond with something more than "I'm interested"...

My biggest OOTM so far is 11...I don't keep track of buy-in drops...

I also have a fairly small sample...approx 1000 at 10s and <500 at 20s (I only play like 10-20 hrs a week and I play a lot of six-max)

I'm in. I have a 19.8% ROI at the 20s, but I got beaten like I stole something in my first 100 33s. Mostly variance, but they're notably tougher.

As I said, this is just something that a handful of people could agree to do or something. I don't really care, it's not the point of this group anyways...just a cool Communist red pinko way of hurting up the 20s and 30s.

I'll throw my two cents in, because I PM'd guildwulf earlier. I moved down from the 50s to the 10s a few months ago after my confidence took a big hit after a 25 buy-in drop. I took my bankroll down to 50 11 buy-ins. and started working my way up again. Since then I've worked my way up to the 30s where I've been 8 tabling for a while. I've got an 18% ROI over about 1000. My biggest need for improvement is my ITM pay - i'll just say I have a huge number of 3rds. I'm happy to participate in all of the points that gildwulf pointed out and I'm looking forward to talking with everyone.

Im very interested in this, and i too think IRC would be a great place to talk. Have 10% roi over 1500 PP 10+1 and 20+2 tours. Running pretty cold though so i think i can do slightly better.

I think IRC + some simple HH repository on the web somewhere (for full HH's) would be a good combo.

gildwulf
07-12-2005, 10:12 PM
That seems like the general consensus. 20+ people now...I figure the easiest thing to do would be to pair people up and trade 2 HH once a week and get feedback...then 2 new HH and another person etc...

p.s. pm me with email again if you guys are interested

Something that needs to be addressed is the shared use of various tools that cost money.

I dont think we should have a group where 4-5 people have paid for Eastbay's tool, PT, etc. and basically share the tool with others. My biggest concern is Eastbay's tool, as he has already contributed more to our win rates that he ever needed to. I would suggest that we all aggree to purchase the tool before we start.

I have created my own tool, which does similar calculations, but I know I will be using Eastbay's tool through other players, so I am willing to pay the piper.

i created an IRC chat room, btw. i don't know if anyone's interested or whatnot, but the room is 2p2sng, on the EFNet network.

as a tool for discussing hands, i'm still a little hazy on either it's, or an off forum mailing list's superiority over just posting in the forum. but i'm guessing that you guys want to do a lot of hand history exchanging and stuff that would otherwise be of less interest to the general population.

Get a client, such as mIRC. Just use google, and grab it.

Install the client.

fill in some information on the configuration screen, and where it says "servers" tell it you want to connect to a random EFNet server.

Connect to the server using the connect button (on mIRC it's the button immediately under the "file" menu.

once connected, you will probably get a popup of some "popular" rooms. you can add your own favorites to this menu if you want, or you can just close this window.

to join a room from the main IRC window, just type /join #roomname

so for instance /join #2p2sng

i'm pretty green at this stuff too, so hopefully i won't have confused anyone else.

Does anyone anticipate sites not allowing Eastbay's tool in the future? I'm not up on the latest, but it seems like Empire, etc have cracked down on people using other programs in conjunction with their poker client, and I worry about the same thing happening here. I'm simply afraid of dropping $80 on a tool I'm going to have to delete from my harddrive in a week. Thoughts?

Eastbay may chime in but I think if the sites ban his tool, they will have to ban Excel also as you could do the same things with it pretty much with enough time. Oh and they should take a screenshot of your office and ban you if they see a calculator on the desk somewhere as you may be cheating with that.

Yea, I don't think it will be a problem because, from what I've heard, you can't use the tool while you play and as long as you have PP closed when you are looking through your hands it should be fine.

Assuming your name is also Flying Moose on Party (skin), part of your variance problem might be going allin preflop on level 2 with ATs. But sucking out to KK is very +EV.

Thanks for the info. I never use IRC and would like to try this. Is it possible to create branching rooms? Considering the topic of this thread, I was curious how simple it'd be to create a group that could discuss Party 55s. I figured it'd be handy and fun if those of us hitting the tables could get on and chat/rant/rave about various hands while we're grinding through.

For anyone still interested, we have set up a couple of different study groups at:

http://suckerpoker.com/phpbb2/index.php.

There is a 10+1, a 20+2 and 30+3 (combined), and a 50+5 in the works. It will be mostly substantive HHs and a venue for people to contact each other to trade HHs.

The study groups are invisible, so PM myself or stupidsucker to open them up.

Peace.

Note: this is by NO means a substitute for any 2+2 discussion...it's just a place where 20-30 people can post HHs every week and trade HH without clogging up the STT forum here.

If there's still room I'm definately interested as well. 4 tabling the 22's mostly, 24% roi over the last 2 months (only 500 so far).
