View Full Version : Nominations for Best Comedy Movie of the last 30 years.

Ok, time for another poll. Comedies this time.

I've decided to limit it to movies from 1975 until today. I just don't think most OOTers know enough about Laurel & Hardy, Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin's work to make it worthwhile including older movies.

That being said, lets hear some nominations.

I tell you what they couldn't get away with any of the stuff they do in that movie today. Expecially some of the lines of the little blond kid.

Very well. I think it will be easier to weed out movies that aren't pure comedies than it is to decide what makes an action movie. If anyone sees any nominees which they feel shouldn't be considered primarily a comedy say so and I'll consider eliminating them from the poll.

I don't think the Incredibles is really a pure comedy.

I was hesitant to nominate the Big Lebowski since I wasn't sure it was a pure comedy, but really, if it's not a comedy, I don't think there's anything else it could be. I'll nominate it, too. I think I'll also nominate A Clockwork Orange, for the same reason.

Come on now, Ace Ventura? Friday, what did that movie have, like three laughs? Office Space, any laughs at all in the last 20 minutes? Is Half-Baked all that funny if you're not...on weed? Fletch?
Some of these others, they're not that bad, but they're not that great either. There's just no contest. Blazing Saddles is the funniest movie since 1975, Airplane!, Caddyshack and Young Frankenstein are certainly close. Groundhog Day is a very good modern comedy, Happy Gilmore's got a lot of funny bits, Austin Powers is funny as well. Lots of these movies are funny.
I just expressed my amazement about this to a buddy of mine, he said; "What did you expect? Airplane? Young Frankenstein? Blazing Saddles? These are simple folk. People of the land. The common clay of the new west."

Well hell. Young Frankenstein is also 1974. That does open it up a bit. Here's a couple of nominations I haven't seen yet:

Undercover Brother
Eurotrip
Club Dread

Not quite BS and YF, but I thought these were pretty funny. I would also like to second Super Troopers, The Big Lebowski, and to throw in O Brother Where Art Thou and Fargo, which I think are brilliantly funny throughout.

I think if you leave out action-comedies you lose a lot of hilarious films, like Midnight Run and Beverly Hills Cop.

Heathers, Fargo, and Being John Malkovich all fall under the heading of "Black Comedy" - most certainly comedies. And I'm sorry, anyone who doesn't see "Fargo" as a comedy wasn't paying any attention. Almost every scene is hilarious. I can see unnominating "GoodFellas," that's not that funny.
Not saying I support "Malkovich" - I think it's horribly pretensious (sp?) and not that funny at all. But I do think they were going for funny.

The paddle game, and the chair, and the remote control, and the matches, for sure. And this. And that's all I need. The ashtray, the remote control, the paddle game, this magazine and the chair."

"He hates these cans! Stay away from the cans!"

Love that movie. I have a very juvenile sense of humor. The Jerk, Dumb and Dumber, Van Wilder, etc. Anything with potty humor gets my vote.

Nice choice there though.

How have we made it this far without Clerks?

Also, the other Kevin Smith movies in whatever order you like (after Clerks).

FWIW I think Office Space, Super Troopers, The Big Lebowski, and Caddyshack are some of the best choices mentioned so far.

What genre would The Three Amigos fall under then, action? You're telling me it isn't a comedy?

The best you can do is say that it was *meant* to be a comedy. What it turned out to be, on the other hand, defies genre.

Come on dude, that movie is clearly comedy, it is just as much of a comedy as alot of the films already nominated. If you didn't think it was funny doesn't mean it isn't a comedy.

Gotta nominate that. I'll concede the point, Heathers counts as a black comedy (and I've seen it at least 30 times -- admittedly, all 30 over fifteen years ago). Being John Malk . . . comedy, I guess, but I'd probably put it in the fantasy camp.

CollinEstes

I think we should go to movies.com and look at the genre listed under each specific title of the questionable movies. Like here is Three Amigos.

If you have to go to a website to determine a movie's genre, then it's not a comedy.

I'm just saying for disputed titles.

I know what you're saying, but comedy should be pretty self-evident. We've decided not to include cross-genre titles, so this shouldn't be too much of an ordeal. He's busting your balls about Three Amigos.

Monty Python -- Grail and Life of Brian

Grail was very funny, but pales in comparison to Life of Brian. It (which I watched 15 minutes ago) is the funniest movie ever after Zoolander.

Andy,

The threads come and go to quickly here these days, and most of these people think Caddyshack or Animal House is the ne plus ultra of comedy. (Of course, both do have their moments.) Okay, here a quick definition of comedy--it ends with a wedding or a couple finds each other.

I've been watching many old comedies lately--I think they're good for my soul (an imaginary construct) right now. My cousin visited from California after my father's death recently, and my mom, cousin, and I watched City Lights. They had never seen it before, and we were all crying at the end. This is comedy in its highest from. So, since my favorite comedies are ruled out, I'll vote for Hannah and Her Sisters, which is beginning to displace Manhattan as my favorite Woody Allen. And John Candy in Trains, Planes, and Automobiles does have something of Charlie Chaplin in him. Also, Bill Forsyth's Local Hero is a great comedy. For pure laughs (and because I can't pick Duck Soup), nothing beats Monty Python and the Holy Grail ("farcical aquatic ceremony"). For black comedy, Election is terrific (I guess Putney Swope is out). Tootsie also has some great performances. And I might the only person on earth (well except for one firend) that thinks Mike Leigh's Naked is hilarious.

Last, one more "comedy" or at least one with many comic moments is a sweet movie called Once Around with Richard Dreyfuss and Holly Hunter. I recommend it highly.

Ok guys. I've been making a list of movies mentioned so far. It's about 160 or so long right now so we obviously need to whittle it down some. If anyone has any other glaring omissions to the list lets hear em soon, by noon tomorrow there won't be any more movies accepted to the list of nominees.

I am also in the process of DQing movies that aren't primarily comedies. If anyone has further comments on this please let those be heard now.

Finally, I do realize Blazing Saddles was made in 1974. This means it doesn't qualify, sorry gang.

That means Young Frankenstein goes too - also 1974. Maybe the best year ever for comedies?

You are kind of knocking out a genre there. Maybe go back to 1970?

Or Airplane just became a big favorite.

Sounds like you need to narrow it down to the top 128 and have four 32 movie regionals.

Not necessarily comedies, but movies which made me laugh the most when I first saw them:

A Fish Called Wanda: especially Kevin Kline

Alladin: Robin Williams unhinged

Analyze This: "Him I don't know."

Arthur: John Gielgud, of all people, was the comedy star

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels: "Rupret!"

Fargo: "You should see the other guy"

Goodfellas: Pesci

Good Morning Vietnam: Robin William unleashed

Planes, Trains & Automobiles: I wasn't a John Candy fan, but he was wonderful here

Rainman: "We're counting cards"

[/ QUOTE ]

If only we were looking for nominations for the most mediocre comedies ever along with two great movies (goodfellas and fargo), this would be the perfect list.

I know I'm getting old because I recently saw Blazing Saddles, which was the funniest movie I ever saw when I saw it the first time, and it wasn't all that funny now. The Producers is still my favorite Mel Brooks movie. (And Zero Mostel the funniest person I ever saw. Watch in The Front when he's in Woody Allen's apartment and he says something that Allen almost laughs at, obviously an unexpected line or delivery from Mostel.) Of course, Wilder and Boyle's Puttin' on the Ritz from Young Frankenstein is special too.

City Lights is indeed wonderful, and the final shot of Chaplin the most wonderful shot in cinema history. Modern Times is probably my favorite movie.

Duck Soup is incomparable. I think I once read that Chico and Harpo switched places in the final battle scene (or some parts of it).

I liked Hannah and Her Sisters but I loved Manhattan. The early Allen comedies were hilarous (Take the Money and Run; Sleeper; Bananas); it pains me that I find all of his movies unwatchable now. I thought Crimes and Misdemeanors was great and I liked Bullets Over Broadway, but nothing much else from the last fifteen years or so, and very little from the previous ten.

Haven't seen Local Hero or Naked. I didn't like Election much. As I said, Candy didn't do much for me, except in Planes, Trains and Automobiles. I've seen Tootsie at least three times and liked it but never loved it. Hoffman was great (as was Murray) but Rainman will always be Hoffman's signature comedy role for me.

I couldn't get through Once Around because Dreyfus and Hunter are best taken in small doses and I've had enough of both of them. I liked Hunter best in The Piano because she was mute.
