View Full Version : I think I need a LOT of help.... *warning: info overload*

I've taken a severe beating lately and managed to burn through an unusually large amount the past few weeks. I think it's just a series of random bad luck, but given how low the variance is in stud8, I'm beginning to wonder if my bad play is the cause. I went over my hand history for the last 75 hands (all the HH that party is showing me) and pasted every hand where I lost more than 1.5BB, in the order they occured. I think I played them very well, but my loss streak for the past two weeks have been so consistently down that I'm seriously questioning myself.

I would appreciate it if you could let me know if you think I played it fine, or if not, where I goofed so can plug the leak. Thanks for any help you can give.

This is all the hands I got scooped on. I didn't post any hands I've won because I think they were fairly straight forward and would have made this post incredibly long.

I slowplayed it to 6th because seat 8 is a total loose manic who would cap two small pairs against an apparent low draw. He did in fact just have two small pairs when we capped 6th, and rivers a miracle boat. This will be the theme for this morning.

I missed a 5th street value raise here. I blame it on feeling weaktight from my gigantic loss streak. Fortunately enough it ended up saving me some money.

I think there's some value in flat calling here as a 3bet by seat 6 might cause all the high hands to fold. I could be in a lot of trouble if that happened, as he could have 4 to a low straight or some kind of flush draw, so I'd be a huge underdog. Best case scenario is that everyone flat calls the raise, in which I gain about 0.9BB in EV, but that's presuming seat 6 does not have any possible straight draw. More realistically, I have a raise on fifth might have a +EV of around 0.6BB, but the fact that it could lead to a seriously -EV situation makes flat calling favourable.

Comments?

Yup I threw away the best hand. But given seat 8's live board and manic tendencies, I think it's an easy throw away. Funny how he only hits his miracle river card when I'm in the hand.

Am I out of my mind in thinking it's just been a bad few weeks or do I just suck at stud8??

I'm a little busy today, but I'll try to get around to looking at all of these and let you know. (Although I don't know if I will be much help as I have been getting my ass kicked lately as well.)

I've been getting absolutely smoked lately. Loose calls, bad beats, and crummy hands. What can you do?

I've been starting a lot of sessions 0/45, and then i finally win a hand and pick up the antes.

I wouldn't expect to lose any more because you are playing stud8. Its still limit poker.

I don't think that just because you're losing means you are only doing something wrong at these times. Remember, poker's a game of optimization, which means winning the most and losing the least. You should also be looking over hands when you are winning to see if you could have gotten more, or u were lucky to win the hand and actually should have given up on it earlier.

I have NO idea how to play 8/B so I can't look at your hands.

I go to a lot of concerts. I have come to believe that the ideal number of encores is one, and the most that anyone should do is two. Santana did five and pulled it off, because he's Santana. The Soweto Gospel Choir did five and wore out their welcome.

I'll respond to the first few and then take a nap. I may and may not get back to this. Don't know what I'm going to do after my nap, but it's probably not going to involve a lot of posting.

First hand: third street is fine. I would also accept bringing it in for a full bet or, my favorite, bringing it in for the minimum and raising when it gets back to you.

Against bad players, I would probably just go ahead and bet fifth street. Checking is fine, because it makes it look like you've got a busted low, and the assumed high hands might give you more action. But if the guy with the Treys is an action junkie, I say jam with him sooner rather than later.

I would probably just call the three-bet on sixth. The aggressor could be full, and who knows, the third man could have a flush. If not, he could well have a flush draw, and he's likely not going anywhere. Given your characterization of the aggressor, though, capping is understandable.

Well, I got through one. Nap time.

See, you post one hand, you get some responses. You post eleven, and people ignore you.

Second hand [(A/images/graemlins/heart.gif 2/images/graemlins/heart.gif) 3/images/graemlins/diamond.gif]:

If you think you can get the guy with the dead Sevens to fold, I'd bet fourth street. I'd be tempted to cap fifth street with your big draw, but at the same time, I'm leery of people who flat call and raise on the same round. That same guy caught a very scary card on sixth. I think the raise is fine, but I definitely just call and hope on the river.

Third hand [(9/images/graemlins/diamond.gif 3/images/graemlins/diamond.gif) 2/images/graemlins/diamond.gif]:

I'm with you until sixth street. Here, you're looking at a guy showing four to a small straight. It is very likely that he is free-rolling on you, and there is no way you're going to get him to fold. You could easily be behind already. Check and call this one down.

Fourth hand [(5/images/graemlins/spade.gif 6/images/graemlins/spade.gif) 5/images/graemlins/heart.gif]:

With a Queen and an Eight behind me, I would probably make it a fulll bet on fourth street. With a Five gone, I'm not too excited about my hand on fourth street and might just give it up there. I do fold on fifth. The pot is small, and the other guy could easily have you beaten both ways. If he's a good player, and Ace and a wheel card are likely hole cards, leaving you sucking serious hind tit.

Fifth hand (2/images/graemlins/diamond.gif 4/images/graemlins/heart.gif) 6/images/graemlins/spade.gif]:

I would probably bet out on fifth, representing an Ace in the hole and hoping to maybe get some people to fold. When the Jack bets into the open Queens, it means either he's got a little something or he's an idiot, possibly both.

Apart from that, you played this one fine, although your hand does kinda suck on fourth street. I call here only because no one else is showing anything and your call closes the action.

Sixth hand [6/images/graemlins/diamond.gif 2/images/graemlins/club.gif) 3/images/graemlins/diamond.gif]:

If you can't bet fourth street with a hand like this, quit playing. It might be for the night or for longer, but you have to be able to bet a hand like this. If you were going for a check-raise, fine. If you were just steaming, quit. The game will be there tomorrow.

I would bet fifth when they both check to you.

Hand 7 [(5/images/graemlins/spade.gif 6/images/graemlins/spade.gif) 9/images/graemlins/spade.gif]:

I play this one the same.

Hand 8 [(AA)3]:

While I prefer to bring this in for the minimum and hope to get a raise in, you played this one fine until the river. I would probably check behind. If he's thinking at all (which isn't consistent with having a Ten in the hole, I know), he should know you have a big pair in the hole. Maybe he looks you up, but I think he should probably fold unless he hits a low or a full house, which he should have plenty of outs to do (unless he has a Ten in the hole).

Hand 9 [(T4)3]:

I hate your call on fifth. The bettor should have you beaten a fair amount of the time, and in any case, it's fairly likely that he has a better hand than you do. I guess betting sixth is OK, but I really don't know, since I don't find myself in this situation too often. There is a player behind you that raised fifth with a garbage board and has now made an open pair. I'd be concerned about him.

Hand 10 [(35)7]:

I play this the same.

Hand 11 [(KJ)K]:

In late position after so many limpers, especially so many with low cards, I limp and hope with this hand on third street. I think checking and calling fourth is fine, and I would fold fifth.

Well, I have been going back and fourth about shelling out $50 to see Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson on Tuesday. The only way I could justify it is if I won a bunch of money at Canterbury, so that's where I wound up last night. Found a juicy $6/12 HE game which was good for $600, so I could treat a friend if I had any. The other thing was that a local radio station was doing a special on Dylan as I drove down, playing songs from 1963-64, a couple of which I hadn't heard before. I don't like his voice, and there are more interesting guitar players, but Dylan's a great songwriter.

Hand 1: I don't understand this at all. If you say villian is a complete maniac and will cap it with nothing than I think you are losing way to much ground not playing this fast. I would limp reraise on third to try and get some extra money in, but it's not a nescessity. You have to bet fifth, checking is just giving up too much. Sixth is fine if you are positive that he doesn't have trips and will jam here with two small pair. Even though you lost this hand I think you missed out on a lot of extra bets.

Hand 2: I bring it in for a full bet on third. Looks like everyone has somewhat decent cards and it is likely someone will be calling you. I cap fifth, but maybe this is overly aggro. Rest of the hand looks fine.

Hand 3: I usually bet 6th in these situations, but that is probably a leak of mine. Checking and calling is much safer. Its almost certain he has a low made. The river you have to cry and call.

Hand 4: I think if you are going to play this hand I complete and take control. That might change the way this hand is played. Good fold on sixth.

Hand 5: I might check raise on fifth, but since you are alsmot certainly playing for half the pot I'm not sure if that would be correct. I'll have to run some sims later and see. Villian betting into the queens hace certainly either trips ot two pair, but it is 1-2 so who knows. Rest of the hand looks fine.

Thats all for now, I'll check back in later with some more.

I haven't had the time to really dig into these hands, BRL, but I have a couple of thoughts:

A: you're not the only one on a slide. I've pissed off 200BB at 3/6 over the last month, and am just now feeling like i'm turning it around.

B: it's damn near impossible to play well at 1/2 after you've made the adjustment to 3/6 and 5/10, where one can actually read hands, push people around, etc. remember, loose stud/8 is almost like omaha- play the nuts, draw to the nuts, punish weak draws, limp and try to catch perfect, muck a lot on fourth...

as for the hands you posted, here are a couple impressions, thoughts, whatever:

-never ever slowplay rolled hands in hi-lo unless they're 999 or better. you will get action because your hand will look like a low- go nuts and try to really push your advantage.

-if you have a big pair and there are limpers ahead of you, limp and see what happens- they're gonna call anyway, keep the pot small so you can knock 'em out on fifth if things look good at that point

-fold more when you catch marginal cards on fourth. a three flush and three low cards on fourth is generally not enough to call with. get out before you get tied on

-At 1/2 and even 2/4 i don't even bother to play hands like 334, 565, etc. they're such marginal winners that they're muckable in any situation except a steal against a weak player, which won't even come up at 1/2. fold those low pairs unless you have an ace kicker.

-I never bring it for a full bet. ever.

just my 2c. keep in mind that i've been losing my ass lately, and my advice may be as bad as my game is right now.

I don't agree with this. Automatically continuing is a mistake, but I think it's worth taking one off more often than not. Of course, this depends on how low your low is, how live your flush draw is, and what you're up against.

Maybe i don't play those hands well, as they seem to have gotten me in a lot of trouble, generally speaking. What you said; it's very situational, and for me, and at low limits, it seems like those calls have been net losers.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I've been playing a little more looser on 3rd, though I think I'm still a little to LAG on the later streets, where I'm usually betting or folding. Instead of posting a mass of HHs again, I figured I'll just post some stats. Does this look normal to you, or am I being too lose on the big bet streets?

pots scooped at showdown: 1%
pots won w/o showdown: 4%

It looks like you are folding a ton of hands on 6th, it looks to me like you should be folding on 5th or seeing the river, just wondering why you fold so much on 6th?

bigredlemon
07-22-2005, 06:03 AM
I usually will call 5th if have either
- the best possible made low
- 4 to the low with a one card straight or flush draw
- draw to the best low with the highest probable pair

If it looks like someone has caught a scary card that could give them the lock in both directions and bet into me, I usually let it go if I have no redraws against him.
i.e. I have 3467JT with a banana, and brick again on 6th, and someone with xx34KA bets out, i usually let it go then.
If I have something like 45728J and someone with xx23K calls 5th and hits a 6 on 6th and bets out, I usually fold here too.
These should be pretty standard laydowns I think.

Iffy laydowns:
If I have (34)567K and xx23KA bets out and xx5/images/graemlins/diamond.gif K/images/graemlins/diamond.gif 6/images/graemlins/heart.gif A/images/graemlins/diamond.gif raises, I usually let it go on 6th too if the /images/graemlins/diamond.gif player isn't a donk, since at that point I'm almost certainly playing for half, and likely getting freerolled if not beaten already.

If you have two big pairs (i.e. AAKK) and two lows have both made their low and likely both have straight or flush draws, I'll fold 6th if it's two bets to me. If I just have aces unimproved, I'll often fold for one bet here too if the lows aren't donks.

Just seems to me you are giving your opponents too much credit with potentially already a large pot for 1 big bet to see the river. Almost half the time you see 6th you fold rather than see the river and that seems -EV to me.
