ok, so. im back from vegas. yay. the girlie is here till sunday. great. what i want to do, is buy a new car. what i want.. im not sure yet, but there is always time to figure that out..

so anyways, to the meat. im gonna play about 50958069830964092457928174981279857827958672972602 37059872969287436984732908638650934759823798756892 7609280480329759082379528375982375 sngs by the end of the month. and yes, that is an EXACT number. i cashed everything down to 10k between my accounts. no cashouts until the end of the month. if i run the accounts to 30k total, its car time. thats the goal. 20k, 20 days. that should cover the down payment at least. bwahhhahahahhaa. ok so this post is kinda pointless, but thats the goal. 20 in 20. who wants to join me in my quest???? (you have to stay away from the 215s though, theyll be too tough with 205809238095829385239859 people in them. holla

I'm definitely joining this challenge. Sounds like fun. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ok my goals will be... some extra cash to fix up my car (already have a decent amount set aside but need more), and need money for a new kitchen to help out at home. 215's here I come! /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

i am going to try to make $1 by the end of the month. before rakeback. that should beat raptor's pre-rakeback numbers at least.

jk, i'm gonna shoot for $7,500 by the end of the month, playing only weekdays.

Im in too, also want to buy a new car before I leave to college, already got $25k locked up for the car, and already made 6-7k in the past 4 days, so ship it.

I also like the m3, but with a new one coming out soon, why buy it now? Ill prob. get the CLK 55 amg or something /images/graemlins/smile.gif Or maybe just buy the m3 and trade it in for the new one?

M3 is a good choice, but I would go for the 06' Z06. Using chevy's new "454" 7.0 Liter LS7 (its really a 455 but they wanted the nostalgia of the 454). Anyway 500 hp and an all aluminum frame plus the floor board made out of balsawood and carbon fiber composites. You know what this should be in a car forum, but cars are my second passion, after poker...or maybe the other way around. I guess it depends on my luckbox for the day. If its in overdrive ill take poker, if its stuck in first ill take cars... /images/graemlins/grin.gif

i'm lazy, how many would you have to play to get there without rakeback by the end of the month?

i have found that the games have changed in a really strange way since the change. it seems like at all buyin levels, people are busting out in like the same number of hands as they used to, until about the bubble. meaning you're getting 5 and 4 handed about a full level earlier, sometimes 2! than you used to. very odd stuff. additionally this means that there's more "poker" to be played once in the money, meaning a player who knows what he's doing instead of just push folding has chances to have extra advantages deeper in the tournaments.

Well give me 7-10 days to get up to the 109s and maybe I'll join you. Funny cause this sounds crazy, but 20k is 8% ROI at the 109s, 90 sngs a day for 20 days and I think I could do that.

At the $215s shouldn't you be able to do this actually playing less than you normally do? At 10% it'd only take around what 800 sngs?? That's only 40 a day.

You can play MTT's or some NL cash if you've got it made for the month.

Is poker your source of income?

Mr_J
07-09-2005, 10:12 PM
"im really struggling in just getting in the hour"

Same. Probally just scared of making money. For me it's all about getting started. Once I've played for an hr I can go another 7, it's just getting those first few started. I've found that if you spread it out throughout the day it seems less like 'work' and more like a chore. I'm just doing 2-3 sessions of 2hrs a day. Usually 1 when I wake up, 1 after lunch and sometimes 1 in the evening. 2 sessions is around 45 sngs and is pretty easy to do.

BTW, when I started 8tabling I started playing sets. Now I've done a dozen or so sets I've found they suck. With 8tabling a set takes around an hr. Running sngs continuously has to see 40%+ turnover.

Raptor, it's about time. These challenges are LONG overdue.

Count me in, although my reasons for playing and goals are different. I made a small bet with my brother that I could make more money playing poker/working at my small-time hourly job this month than he could at his summer job. I won't go into specifics but his hourly rate is double mine (sad, I know). I cannot play poker full-time, or anywhere close to full-time for that matter. My goal is to make 1k playing the 33s (4-tabling).

With my job and poker that should be enough to win.

Note: I will be on vacation for a week. My challenge actually started on the 1st and will go until the 31st.

Mr_J
07-09-2005, 10:36 PM
Let's say $650 per 100 sngs at lower buyins and $1k per 100 sngs at the 109s. Plan is to play 900 sngs. It's not about ROI for me, but about averaging 40-50 sngs a day.

Infiniti G35. It's sexy and you can get a 2003 for around $25k. Insurance won't be too expensive on it either compared to more expensive cars you could buy.

Of course you could drop 40k or something on a car, but personally I'd bank the majority of my money as a G35 looks clean as hell and it's cheap.

I dont know what alot of companies will insure. I knew a guy who was 18 who wanted to get a new Porsche Boxter under his dad's name and they wouldn't insure him.

But like you said, if you want something fast then obviously a g35 isnt for you. Get the M3. It's a BMW and chick magnet.

"z06 is a bit out of the range right now"

What?? That's just 4 months of 8 tabling the $109s @ 10%.

I'm gonna get an Ultima Can-am. Topless, sex on wheels in black, does 0-60 in about 4 with a stock LS1. Upgrade it to a 20k engine and see 0-60 in under 3. Course you gotta build it yourself (for around 40-50k, factory build to rolling chassis = 90k).

"I dont know what alot of companies will insure"

A smaller or high end company would be prepared to negotiate, and raptor has the cash.

Also, if raptor got a wrx there's no point insuring it. Insurance is a -EV bet, and only worthwhile if you can't afford the hit if your car gets totalled/stolen. raptor earns enough to get pissed off, but not enough for it to be a disaster. WRX is only a few weeks work??

"Get the M3. It's a BMW and chick magnet."

BMW = wankers car (sorry to anyone who owns one, but wankers usually drive them). M3 is a great car though.

No it's not. If you can recoup the losses reasonably quickly it's silly to have insurance. If raptor was going to buy a wrx then he should get 3rd party but not full comp.

he could be, uh, vaguely risk averse, which would, uh, make insurance quite worthwhile. that's, uh, why insurance exists. not, uh, because it's a good buy or anything. but, uh, because in general, people are pretty risk averse about large sums of money, even people who, uh, have lots of money.

but hey, that's just the economist in me talking.

"but hey, that's just the economist in me talking."

Lol you guys are missing my point. I agree it's about being risk averse. My point is that if you can comfortably afford to take the financial hit, then there's no point in getting full comp. I guess raptor probally would want to insure a WRX though (~25kUS??) since it probally does represent a good chunk of cash (take out living expenses, br etc and the hit would probally hurt quite a bit).

I believe it's also illegal to drive in many states w/o car insurance. And don't all the cars raptor's thinking of "represent a good chunk of cash" since they're all in the 20k+ range? (sort of the point of the challenge?)

Well it probally depends on the type of insurance. In australia we have 3 types for cars. The first 2 are 3rd party insurance (personal & property, personal is compluslory). The third type is full comprehensive which covers dmanage to your car, theft etc. This is the one I'd pass on if I'm willing to take a financial hit worth the value of the car.

Not sure how insurance works in the US but it's probally similiar?

I don't want to encourage you to crash yourself or anything. I guess you just had a mishap in a car, which I'm sure wasn't your fault.

I rode motorcycles for 15 years and only stopped because I couldn't strap a baby seat onto one.

If you haven't ridden before I would suggest you work your way up from the $11s, er I mean 600s and not jump into a 1000. Maybe something like

By the way, if you're going to get something that's both fast in a straight line AND handles competently (M3, M5, Elise, etc.), you might consider some sort of performance driving school. Cars such as these can really get you in trouble if you're not familiar with their traits. If you're not careful, you could do something like lose the rear of an M3 or M5 in a corner, and really hurt yourself. I'm not one to really be giving advice in this matter (since I'm working on performance driving in a lesser vehicle at the moment), but I'd highly suggest starting out in a car that's not so capable first.

Also, a mid-engine RWD car such as the Elise can really ruin your day if you don't know what you're doing.

Mr_J
07-10-2005, 06:21 AM
We're only allowed to ride 250cc for at least our first 9 months (for sportsbikes, it's actually up to 660cc as long as the power to weight ratio isn't high, and the power to weight limit is around what the top 250cc bikes are, you know cbr250rr, zx2r etc, top 250cc 2 stroke bikes are too powerful). While it might suck later on being stuck on a 250, it stops alot of people killing & shitting themselves on 600 or the 1000 supersports. Putting something as fast as a porsche twin turbo or viper in the hands of a beginner is silly...worse since the bike only has 2 wheels and no protection.

I like 600s, nice in the twisties. Any serious biker would take a nice set of curves anyday over a drag race. Doesn't mean the straights cant be fun /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Give me a zx6r for every day of the week.

You've done your research. I was going to suggest the Elise. An absolutely INCREDIBLE performance car. Amazing to think you can give a Modena a headache for only $60k. (I've ridden in a new 360 Modena wuite a bit, and I will tell you this: it will make you dump in your pants.) The Lotus seems to be ideal for someone who wants supercar performance without the "I'm an [censored]" stigma associated with Ferrari. (Check out www.forcedfed.com (http://www.forcedfed.com) for a shop in CA that is doing some INSANE Elise mods. How about 0-60 in 4 seconds?) :O

Interestingly, I just told my wife last week my new goal with poker is to buy one (in cash) with my winnings. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I'm also a Subaru nut. I currently have a 2005 Legacy GT LTD, (like a grown up WRX) and it's sweet as hell. If you like to do mods, you really can't go wrong with a Subaru. Great community, and TONS of options. AWD 0wnZ.

I drove my friend's M3 last week, and it was a blast, but I think a Stage 2 WRX would probably give it a run for it's money. (Not sure though, will have to look at some tuner sites.)

In the end, I say get the Elise.

Then you and I can ride off into the sunset holding hands, because we will have become gay for each other.

"I don't know much about kit cars, personally."

The quality of the parts is very high, these things are very serious performance machines. Holds world record in 0-60, 0-150-0, 1/4 mile and skidpad (when build to factory spec, factory built also = production car). You could get the factory to build it, but it'd set you back probally 120k+. Definately not for everyone, but great value for money.

I generally agree. I thought about the 600 advice before I went to sleep and I think a real beginner should start on like a 125 or 250 street bike.

The twisties are where the action is, but the newer 750s and 1000s are not very heavy and can handle the twisties almost as well, and when you pull out of a corner at 40mph it is pretty cool that you lift up your front wheel. Whatever it is, if it has 2 wheels it is fine by me though. I have more fun riding a 250 Honda Rebel or a beat up harley with only one cylinder firing than any BMW M3.

My parents were as against motorcycling as possible. I would have ridden no matter what, but I managed by age 19 to get them to the point where they wouldn't have heart attacks.

Despite the comments about the wheelies, I am/was a very conservative rider.

I sold my nicer bike and only have a very old Virago 750 which I never ride. If I had time to ride, I would get a Honda 919.

It's a Lotus, not a Honda. You can expect all sorts of weird little things to happen, but Lotus has been very good about taking care of their Elise customers. (Check out http://www.elisetalk.com for some enthusiast opinions and stories.)

It's not practical, by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, it's probably NOT a good idea for anyone who wants a car for anything other than sport driving. It's teeeeny tiny, has a horribly stiff ride, has essentially no interior, and no trunk space. I doubt you could even get groceries in it.

The price/performance ratio is extreme, and they are beautiful to look at. Expect a ton of attention from police and pedestrians. (Especially when they see the pacifier dangling from your mouth.)

Really, I think the STI would be a hell of a lot more practical for you, and a lot more fun if you'd like to mod it. (Judging from your screennames, I'd be willing to guess you'd enjoy ricing it out. /images/graemlins/wink.gif )

And frankly, it's more forgiving than the M3 or Elise for inexperienced drivers. Subaru AWD is teh hotness.

Have you considered a Volkswagen R32?

Btw, have you considered the Noble M12 (http://www.topgear.com/drives/EQ/A0/) raptor?

Think of it as a ready made kit car, that is hot as fook looking and is reported to be the best handling car on the roads today.

£48K is a little more than you expected, but for an everyday supercar...

-----

Alternately was the 350Z suggested? The new convertable is a cool car to pick up the bitches.

£30K over here for the top of the range model, im sure its less over there cos we get screwed over constantly.

-----

This is my favourite car of all time:

Ok, i know you dont like it cos its twice as old as you (hell, twice as old as me) its unreliable and it doesnt have beatch appeal, but its my dream car /images/graemlins/grin.gif

FWIW, Raptor is alot of things, but he has always "kept it real" in regards to his ability, and what he thinks is obtainable. Something that I find refreshing around these parts. I don't bring this back up because I want to rub his nose in failure, I bring it up because I want to know what kind of car he's getting.

I'll bet he's just waiting for rakeback, although he is 32 and 36 on the current leaderboard, so if he doesn't kick it in gear over the next few days he won't make his other goal for the month.

well, there is good reason for being 36/32 on the board. during the first week or so i was right up there and was gonna have a neat lil competition with fiery justice for the top spots.. however.. it seems as though im not good enough at sngs to play 215s for greater than 10%, meaning that i will go through 5k downswings like 3 times a week. i didnt exactly like this.

as such, i did a lot of talking with my poker buds, lotta people on this forum that i have met and hung out with in RL and such, and have decided to take a lil break. my mind is simply not right. i have it in my mind that im not winning, and its causing problems with my play.. at least i think it is.. my results have been less than stellar as of late.. and yea variance blah blah but something must be off..

anyways, ive been reviewing hand histories, hangin out with the girlie, and just takin it easy in general. im on day 9 of clean and sober from sngs.. and i have no super strong desire to jump back in. im training a couple people in the 10+1s, and working with another person in 2k NL game.. yea kinda odd jump in levels.. but whatever..

anyways, i DID NOT achieve my goal for the new car.. i suppose that will have to wait. i got off on the wrong foot in the first 2 days swinging down 6k.. so i was kinda pissed about that. anyways over the next few days i got it back to +500ish, then kept hittin it and dropped 4k again. over the next couple days i was up and down at one point UP 6k, then back down to +1500. at that point, i just said **** it cuz i was really feelin crummy..

anyways, i still dont have the mental capacity to handle the variance of a low roi high buyin game.. even with mad multitabling. when i was 12 tabling the 55s, i couldnt have been happier.. cruisin just under 20%, havin few downswings, and just constantly banking solid wins. i guess cockiness and pride got the best of me when i saw the ZJ post, so i said wtf, why couldnt i do that. anyways.. it didnt work out. i figured i could just make myself play 100 sngs a day and be fine emotionally cuz i would be playing enough volume that even if i had a 10k swing i should be able to outswing it in a matter of a few days. meh.. sometimes things dont go the way you think they will, or even the way statistics say they will..

ANYWAYS.. i think i may just 12 table 55s or 109s when i get back, as i dont need a huge influx of money anymore. im going back to school and all that.. (took last semester off to get rich on poker..) so ill be cuttin down in hours at least a little bit.. prolly gonna go down to 800 or so sngs a month when school comes back.. maybe 1k, who knows. anyways, im trying to be a normal person again, instead of sitting in front of my comp loading up table after table for 12 hours straight 7 days a week.

what ive decided.. is goals ****ing suck /images/graemlins/grin.gif. you get let down sometimes, and that sucks. and if you reach yer goal, you were expecting it to happen anyways. MAYBE when i come back, ill have a 200 in 24 hour challenge or something like that.. who knows. but for now.. im being a 19 year old. holla

Yeh, goals just aren't me. I'm just going to play 30-40 $55s (or maybe 109s if I work on my game enough) a day. It's around 10k a month, but give or take a bit I couldn't care less. I just want a nice chunk of change by the end of this year which I'm pretty much assured of if I play. That's my only goal.
