Ok...So its a psuedo gig...Im an intermediate level player...any suggestions on easy songs that are fun to sing along too? Im not looking to WoW people with skill...only play fun stuff..If I dont know it already I have to learn it by this afternoon...

Just a list of possibles off the top of my head:

Counting Crows-Mr. Jones
Jumper-Third Eye Blind
Old Apartment-Bare Naked Ladies (Possibly Brian WilsoN)
Hook and/or Run Around-Blues Traveler
Wonderwall-Oasis
Say it Aint so-Weezer
Grow Old with you-Adam sandler-from the end of the wedding singer (people usually like this and its short).
All for you-Sister Hazel
Jack Johnson-Bubble Toes or Flake.
The Verve Pipe-Freshman

Was possibly thinking of Karma Police, layla, Cannonball(damien Rice), maybe some howie day or flaming lips (too unknown??)

The main problem is over the last year or so ive only been learning songs that most people dont know... a lot of indie/alt rock stuff that doesnt come on the radio.

i've found it's usually the absolute easiest songs that go over the best - sublime's what i got is two chords - D, G and repeat. same goes with jane says by janes addiction - Am, G and repeat. everyone knows the words and sings along.

How about: don't be the guy who plays his acoustic guitar at the BBQ.

Most people only pretend to enjoy/tolerate it.

Go ahead and put on a CD and enjoy yourself. Don't worry about performing because it isn't a concert. If you really must play, do it in a separate place for a girl or two NOT in front of everybody.

Good friends and a bottle of wine. By Ted Nugent. Great tune. They'll love it.

It works if it is more of a "family" oriented BBQ; less if it is a 20 or 30 something BBQ.

Also, don't expect many people to pay attention for more than a song or two. I would play a song or two, and then stop. If people really want more, that's great, play some more later in the BBQ.

Anyway, song choice is really dependant on the age of the listener, if you want attention. The more familiar and easier to sing along the better.

Some Beatles tunes work well. I think "Jane Says" is a poor choice; I like it a lot, but it's actually kind of hard to sing along with, and how many people do you think actually know more than a few words?

Another tip is to pick songs you already know how to play well.

Don't know if you're into Neutral Milk Hotel but King Of Carrot Flowers, Pt. 1 would be a great choice.

F, Bb, C (barre chords for the F and Bb). You never even have to leave first position.

Learning some old school Dr. Dre or Ice Cube classics on acoustic guitar would be such a nice addition to your little playlist.
