Moving up to higher limit

I'm starting to get more serious about my poker playing (just bought some books and poker tracker) and am wondering at what point I should contemplate moving from 1/2 to 2/4 (or 3/6). I'm trying to follow some of the lingo on the boards (looks like people use BB/100 to evaluate play) and I'm curious to find out what different metrics should be used to help make my decision, how big my sample size should be, etc.

BB = Big Bet so a BB at 1/2 is 2. We generally agree that 300BB is suffiecient for a limit. Some feel you need at least 500BB. As for when to move up thats up to you.
