View Full Version : Prop Betting and Running Your Mouth

Boris
07-06-2005, 07:07 PM
So the other day I was insanely hung over and in a food coma after eating a hearty breakfast of pancakes, bacon and eggs. I start running my mouth and sure enough El Diablo catches my BS and I end up making a $100 prop bet that I am very likely to lose. The point is I manned up and put my money where my mouth was. I didn't try to backtrack, equivocate or generally make like a politician.

Then this (http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=2801013&page=0&view=c ollapsed&sb=5&o=&vc=1) post is made.

[ QUOTE ]
I would be willing to bet someone a relatively large amount, a couple hundred, on this. I don't think I'll get any takers though.

[/ QUOTE ]

and then this: (http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=2803028&page=0&view=c ollapsed&sb=5&o=&vc=1)

[ QUOTE ]
I'd bet less on this than on the A's-Yanks thing, but only because the As thing is a slam dunk for me and the yankees making the playoffs is just a good deal.

sure, a hundred bucks or so?

[/ QUOTE ]

So Kryo responds:

[ QUOTE ]
I think the Yanks having a better second half record than the Yanks is a much better deal than the Yanks making the playoffs. But yeah, I'll do $100 with you even money on the Yanks playoff chances. Should there be a third party involved?

[/ QUOTE ]

and I respond (what can I say? I'm an action junkie):

[ QUOTE ]
If you give me 4-1 I'll bet $100 the A's have a better record in the second half of the season than the Yankee's

[/ QUOTE ]

And suddenly mr. voltron changes his mind about making a bet when he realizes that people actually want to take him up on his original proposition to make a wager.

voltron:

[ QUOTE ]

4-1 is giving too much.

[/ QUOTE ]

no counter offer? just "4:1 is too much"? I thought this yanks thing was a slam dunk?

[ QUOTE ]
i didnt chicken out, i just realized it would be an absolutely craptastic bet. slight difference.

[/ QUOTE ]

[ QUOTE ]
i wasnt trying to make a huge bet about something with the intention of not following up on it.

[/ QUOTE ]

right. Who here thinks voltron should prove his gambling honor by taking action from kyro and myself? who here would lend voltron money if they were at a home game, knowing he backed down from his original offer?

IndieMatty
07-06-2005, 07:12 PM
I've been reading that thread. You guys changed the bet on him, he should take any wager that involves even money and the stated "bet". Yanks VS A's second half record.

He has every right to turn down any "odds" or changes like including the playoffs though.

EDIT: The playoff thing is grey. He should probably accept Kyro's wager.

Voltron87

this thread is super lame.

i made the relatively large comment because bison said he'll wager one dollar that the As will have a better record than the yankees for the rest of the season. I said id bet a lot more than that.

yes, usually someones idea of whether they will make a bet changes when all of a sudden they are giving 4-1 odds.

you have no case in the "gambling honor" section. kyro can be a little miffed, but not really, since we came nowhere near a binding bet.

and this part, by me, is true:

[ QUOTE ]
i wasnt trying to make a huge bet about something with the intention of not following up on it.

[/ QUOTE ]

all of a sudden you come along demanding 4-1 odds and youre calling me a coward? what what what

Boris

even money was never discussed.

Voltron87
07-06-2005, 07:18 PM
i think the only question thats up for debate is: does this constitute a bet, and am i a pussy for backing out? i can see why people would say yes, though i dont think its something i can be held to.

"sure, a hundred bucks or so?"

Kyro did. Bison's initial bet was even money.

I did get the specifics of everyone's statements confused; so take my initial post with a grain of salt.

Voltron87

dude, if there is any argument is with the kyro bet.

bison:

[ QUOTE ]

After the games of 7/5/05, The A's are at 41-41 and the Yankees are 43-39.

Who will have a better record in the next 80 games?

I think the Athletics will, and I am willing to wager a dollar bill straight up against the first person who wishes to wager a dollar on the Yankees.

Now would be the time for creative sidebets as well.

we never made a bet. but you said you wanted to bet and said i wanted to bet. so we should make a bet. I'm willing to go down to 3.5:1. remember, you said this yankees wins thing was like money in the bank.

Voltron87
07-06-2005, 08:41 PM
Haha, what a concession from Boris! 3.5-1 now! /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I said I wanted to bet, and you now set some crazy odds and think we should make a bet? I'm sorry, that makes no sense.

I would go up to 2-1, thats it, because if I go anyhere higher thats where I think my edge goes from solid to marginal. I would bet up to 400$ to your 200, and thats an offer I won't back down from. assuming the yanks start at 43-39 and the As are 41-41. so we'd take the final records and subtract those.

a) Voltron is a pussy for talking smack using words like "slamdunk" and then not taking your action, Boris. Pussy, but not doing anything wrong, besides not being a man about it or having any dignity or self-respect.

b) Voltron is a complete bitch for not accepting kyro's wager. There was a clear gentlemanly offer and acceptance there.

Kyro changed the bet from A's Vs Yanks to the Playoffs for the Yankees. Voltron mentioned it, but that wasn't what he "offered".

kyro
How confident are you on the Yanks' playoff chances? I'd throw down a bet or so that they won't.

Voltron

Voltron
Well, I can actually get better odds than 1:1 at an online sportsbook, so I might not do it for that reason. It's kind of (ridiculously) -EV.

I believe pryor15 screwed this deal up with his addition of information to a bet he wasn't involved in. Very poor form, IMO. Suddenly the bet went from a good deal to "I need better odds."

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah, because you ran your mouth and called it a slam dunk. Boris then stepped up w/ very reasonable odds for a slam dunk. Your options are to either accept the bet or admit that you were just a big-talking pussy and really aren't willing to stand behind your "slam dunk" assessment. Let me reiterate, though, you have every right to not take Boris' bet. There is no honor or trust broken if you don't take his 4-1 wager. You just look like a guy who isn't willing to back up what he says, but that's a lot of guys.

If someone makes a strong statement but won't lay 4$ for their opponents 1$, a pretty big spread, that does not make them a pussy.

my bad. by the time i realized that, it was too late and they were well on their way. in my defense, this isn't something that should have changed the deal. anyone who makes a bet w/o knowing what sort of underdog they are has no business changing things once they get that info. it seemed like a done deal to me.
