View Full Version : A's vs. Yanks: who will have the better record in the second half?

After the games of 7/5/05, The A's are at 41-41 and the Yankees are 43-39.

Who will have a better record in the next 80 games?

I think the Athletics will, and I am willing to wager a dollar bill straight up against the first person who wishes to wager a dollar on the Yankees.

Now would be the time for creative sidebets as well.

Yanks are not only the better team, but will also most likely make a major move to upgrade their team this month. And with Zito looking like a AAA pitcher theres no way I could put any money on the A's. Give Billy Beane the off season, A's will be back to the top of the AL, just some patience.

If you noticed, Zito has been pitching well for a while.

Zito looking like a AAA pitcher? You mean the guy that's got a 3.25 ERA in the last two months?

Blez: You were talking about starting to build now and be more competitve. We're getting near the time of year when GMs make the decision about whether they are going to be buyers or sellers at the trading deadline. Is that something you've already made a decision about? Or are you going to wait to see how things play out over the next several weeks?

Beane: That's always an easy question to answer. We are always both. There's never been a year that we aren't both. The goal here is not to have a cute little team that's competitive. The goal here is to have a team where year after year we are competing for a playoff spot. That's always the way I think. We want to be good for a long time. We're always going to be both.

It all matters in the win loss column for Zito. 4-4(with 2 ND which his team lost so the team is 4-6) is just no where near good enough for an ace. Is Harden and Haren gonna carry them when their bullpen cant pitch anymore? A's are gonna plummet in the second half its just gonna happen.

funny, no one was saying that when clemens was 3-3 w/ an era of 1.30. or now when they're 8-9 when he pitches. is he nowhere good enough for an ace?

I agree that the Yankees will do better, but you are a stupid Yankee fanboy. Honestly. Wins and losses are irrelevant when measuring the success of a pitcher.

Yeah, and the Astros are 8-9 when Roger Clemens starts.

Gimme an over/under on A's wins over the next 80 games.

Ok...so the way i put it was wrong. For the A's to be successful they have to win games when Zito pitches not because its necessary but Zito will give them a chance to win. What I was trying to say was it didnt happen in the first part of the season. Not gonna cop out though, I was an idiot, just putting it out there. And by the way, I despise the Yankees and hate "the boss" with a passion. The only Boss i know is Bruce. The Mets will be the #1 team in New York soon enough.

The friggin A's do this every year. I was going to mention them as a favorite to win the wildcard back when they were like 10 games under .500.

I was also looking for the A's to rebound in a big way. I don't know if they rebound far enough to get the wild card, but I'd be willing to bet that they get close. I hope they get there. I've been a closet A's fan for 30 years and will root for them when the M's are sucking. What's the O/U on Bavasi losing his job here?

I would be willing to bet someone a relatively large amount, a couple hundred, on this. I don't think I'll get any takers though.

pyhtag records, since a lot of you take them seriously:

.543 and .516, I'll let you guess which one is which.

I hate the Yanks, but I'll take this bet because I hate the A's even more. The A's just ain't got the horsies this year.

You choose the creative wager. I've got no shame.

How confident are you on the Yanks' playoff chances? I'd throw down a bet or so that they won't.

I'd bet less on this than on the A's-Yanks thing, but only because the As thing is a slam dunk for me and the yankees making the playoffs is just a good deal.

sure, a hundred bucks or so?

I think the Yanks having a better second half record than the Yanks is a much better deal than the Yanks making the playoffs. But yeah, I'll do $100 with you even money on the Yanks playoff chances. Should there be a third party involved?

btw, if anybody wants to give me even money on the yankees making the playoffs i will take it.

Well, I can actually get better odds than 1:1 at an online sportsbook, so I might not do it for that reason. It's kind of (ridiculously) -EV.

ok, when people make a bet on these forums, they agree a specific amount, a specific method of payment, and some terms, and say they agree to it. i suggested something but we never really agreed to it, and its pretty clearly not a bet. the high strung comment was not directed at you. the jamba juice one was.

im not trying to be some macho guy or anything, thats what the calm down comments meant.

kyro
07-06-2005, 06:29 PM
I know we didn't agree to a bet. But what am I supposed to think when this conversation happens.

You: I'll take bets on something
Me: How about the Yankes don't make the playoffs.
You: Sure, how about $100 bucks
Me: I'm game
You: Never mind.

I think you're a copout. That's what. Anybody can "make bets" and not stand by them.

I'LL GIVE ANYONE 30:1 ODDS HERE THAT THE RED SOX WIN THE NEXT WORLD SERIES!!!!!1111

any takers?

Voltron87
