I figured if he had anything short of a pair of Qs he couldn't call.

Once your opp calls the flop, check-fold the turn. Balance this by check-raising the turn sometimes in sitations like this as well. This works out excellently because it will sometimes lead to them giving you a free card in situations exactly like this where you would love one.
