You get 4 spaces to put 4 faces. Who goes up? Most of this will probably be US-centric, so we can do a US and a World version if you want. There is no critera like "best athlete" or "biggest impact." Just room for 4 people.

Wayne Gretzky
Babe Ruth
Tiger Woods
Michael Jordan

is what I came up with. But it sucked to leave off people like Pele, Arnie, Montana, Ali, etc.

I trade Ali for Tiger. Who would be the best representative for football? Is it definitely Montana? I don't know that the NFL has a definitive face like Jordan or Gretzky.

This is just me. I'm not a big football fan, and I don't watch hockey. There are a bunch of people I would like to put on, Pete Sampras, Clemens, and others, but I like my 4.

edit- looking back again, my list sucks. maybe it should only be retired athletes?

Lance and Jordan should be locks on everyone's list.

I used to think like this as well. But when you sit back at look at all the teams who attempted and failed to build a championship team around a dominant guard, I had no choice to concede to Jordan's greatness

It wasn't too long ago that having a dominant scoring guard and another all start caliber perimenter player the accepted recipe to NBA success. This was because of Jordan yet has not only not been duplicated but abandoned all together for the traditional big man road with a balanced supporting cast.

It still comes down to Jack was better in his day. They are putting him on the British pound for Christ sakes. Now that is an icon, a guy from Ohio is the only person not in the royal family ever on the pound.

If it's going to be a world one, Joe Montana is not a very good inclusion as football is essentially a two-country sport. I suggest going with something like hockey (Gretsky), baseball (Ruth), or boxing (Ali).

No disrespect to Tiger but I don't think i'd put a golfer on the mount. I think historically, Boxing has been a more important sport and I believe Ali was a bigger figure for his time.

I hate not having a football player, but I don't think one player stands out above the others. Which is kind of cool actually.

Tiger. Too young. And golf sucks.
Gretsky. Hockey is marginal at this point.
Jeter. Hahahahahahah!
Lance. Ehhhhh... close, but cycling is too marginal.

I think Jordan, Ali and Ruth are locks. But the fourth spot is up for debate. It should probably be some olympic hero, but I'm having a hard time coming up with an appropriate one. Carl Lewis? Too weird. Maybe Jesse Owens? Jim Thorpe? Thoughts?

I think everyone is missing the boat on this one. The current faces on Mt Rushmore are all people who went above and beyond in building this country. They are the elite cream of the crop.

I think the sports Mt Rushmore should have the super elite athletes. I was thinking of people that changed the way the game was played. Thus, my 4 would be:

Ali -- he MADE boxing famous
Pele -- no one knew what a bicycle kick was until he did it
Wilt -- no one played center like him, and we still think of him in that era when it was Russell who won all the championships
Jim Brown -- they changed the rules of lacrosse when he played at Syracuse because of him, oh yeah, and he was pretty good at football

Honorable mention to:
Gretzky -- he earned the "Great One" moniker and made everyone forget about Gordie Howe
Maradonna -- his performance in 86 was a work of God, and he brought Napoli back to the forefront in Italian soccer
Babe Ruth -- how many 20 game winners can hit 60 home runs??
Lance Armstrong -- his story hits many different people on many different levels. I hesitate to mention him though because he's a 1 race specialist. Kinda like a closer in baseball. But there is definitely no denying his greatness.

I'm missing a few, but thats a pretty good list to start.
