fold ,i 2 bet,button calls,rest fold

FLOP. A 9 4 rainbow
i bet ,button calls

TURN: 8
i bet ,he 2 bets, i call

RIVER, 8
i check,he bets, now im thinking he could have a4 or a9, more likely a8 but i decided to raise to see what he does.
he then reraised me, i folded.

ok itihnk the cr was worth a shot but was the fold awful?
he may not even understand that he has been counterfeited?

The river play is very poor. If you're going to check/call (and you should), don't check/raise. A4 will likely bet into you. A9 still beats you. Leading the river (intending bet/call) is worse, but much better than a check/raise/fold line.
