View Full Version : Ethical question concerning dealer shadiness

Long story short: player had just won a sizeable pot, but before the dealer starts to poosh the pot toward him, the player tosses him a red chip (which I think is fairly generous in a 1/2 NL game). In one fell swoop, the dealer takes the allotted $5 tip AND another red from the massive pot, says "thank you," and pooshes the chips toward the player. Player does not notice.

Over the course of the night, I saw this done twice by two different dealers. Obviously this is a small sample size, but if I see it happen again I am not sure how I'd go about it. I would like to continue playing at this poker club but would also like to rectify the situation.

I've thought about pulling the dealers off to the side to let them know, but this would not stop them when I'm not around. I've also thought about telling one of the owners in private but I also don't want these dealers to lose their job. What should I do here?

If a cashier at the grocery store or a waitress at a diner stole from customers, there would no question they should be fired. Same case here.

Ask the manager to review the tape.

I'm a dealer and appreciated every toke I'm given. If I EVER see a dealer where I work do that, they will (in the immortal words of Al Capone Jr), GET KICKED IN THE NUTS!

I work my but off to make sure the game is run right and would never jeopordize that for a few bucks. It's just not worth my job or gaming liscense.

Notify floor (and if they don't do anything, notify security).

This is theft from the players, and it should be treated as such.

Don't mean to sound like a dick, but is this a time or a rake game? Because sometimes a dealer will forget the rake and pull it out at the end...

Time game. At a poker club, not casino, so I'm not sure if there are any cameras.

Say no MORE! Go ahead, call the floor over for a chat. I'm sure the dealer's brother-in-law is an excellent judge of character. Hit the bricks, dude. You're in a clip joint.

The player may owe the house money, or the house may have staked the player. This is an unfortunate side effect you will sometimes see in a card club where we live, but its a reality of our surroundings.

If you feel it was shady, pull the dealer aside and ask why politely. He doesn't want to lose his job, I'm sure he will explain.

If you are concerned about shady dealings, then keep a close eye on the pitch of the cards, and how he cuts the deck. A watchful eye catches everything, but I don't think there is anything to find in your scenario.

The key to a fair deal is the one-handed box cut. This is standard technique anywhere you go. Most mechanic tricks require a false cut (two-handed).

I can't understand why you're so concerned about a crooked dealer's job. I think it is the responsibility of everyone at the table to keep the game honest and clean. I myself would say out loud 'hey, you just took an extra chip from the pot.' I understand that not everyone wants to be so publicly vocal, but I believe that you absolutely need to tell the floor. Even if it's a clip joint, at least you're letting them know that someone is paying attention.

Overstating the case a bit, there's a quote that goes something like "The only thing necessary for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing"

I don't think this is overstating the case. The issue at hand is clearly theft. While not on the order or murdering 50 five-year-olds who attack you, this is still evil.

Why the hell not? It sounds like they are petty thieves.

So a dealer is palming chips out of your pot? I'd tell him he better put all of them back or he's gonna get his ass fired, thrown in jail, and beaten down. Seriously.

If it was a casino obviously you should say something or call the floor on the spot. The dealer would be fired and I imagine not be able to get another dealer job in the same jurisdiction.

In a 'private' club (which I'm assuming means underground card hall) it's a lot murkier. There could be lots of things going on, and who knows if the house is in on it. Honestly I would probably do nothing unless I saw extra money being taken from one of my pots or the pot of someone I knew (who I knew was an unwiting victim). Then I would probably talk to the floor privately or just take my business elsewhere.

Listenign to the cards is more importanat than watching them. A card being delat from some place other than the top of the deck sounds differentely. Also you should make sure the dealer sqares the deck, cuts it with one hand and then squares it again. With the growth in poker there are many places this does not happen; the floorstaff does not understand the importance of (or doesn't even know)handling the cards in the correct manner so the dealers are left unsupervised (for the most part).

they should be fired... the guy was extremely generous with a $5 tip, but even if he didnt, the dealer shouldnt take anything out of the pot

I deal and would be the first person to string up a crooked dealer. 6 weeks ago my house had two dealers and two players jailed for theft. In Nevada any size theft in gaming is a felony.

You call it out the moment you see it happen and ask , non-accusatory, why he isn't pushing the whole pot.

Get some balls. If a dealer is skimming off pots, I could care less if they lose their job. They're not DOING their job. Personally, this type of person, if they are skimming, I could care less if they end up homeless and in a cardboard box. This isn't a little minor violation that should be overlooked.

Police and protect your own game. Or don't bitch when it starts happening to you.
