View Full Version : The real seed list: Greatest American Rock Bands

fluxrad

Please choose 8 of the following 20 bands. (I realize now picking 16 would guarantee almost everone picked the same top 10 or so). Voting ends Tuesday at 5pm MST. I will accept sexual favors for higher seeding preference.

If you feel that an obvious heavyweight contender was left out of the vote...by all means feel free to make your own poll with competative sponsorship and celebrity endorsement. This poll features spokesman John Turturo.

1) The Doors
2) Nirvana
3) Eagles

with very few votes in, this poll is turning out quite differently than I would have expected.

how the hell did Boston and Pearl Jam get on this poll?

If they're on it, why not The Cars or Blondie or Talking Heads?

Talking Heads definately belong.

The Cars and Blondie are as argueable as Boston, IMO. While all three have some notable hits, none of them stands out as terrifically prolific or influential. Having said that, The Cars and Blondie are both WAY cooler than Boston.

Very lame that Nirvana has so many votes. MTV elevated them from a very good, maybe great, band to epic proportions, when they don't deserve it.

Steely Dan?
CSNY?
If Metallica, why not RATM?

fluxrad
07-05-2005, 01:35 AM
CSNY was a good one. They might have been on there if someone had actually nominated them in the other thread.

51 of the 92 voters so far think there are 8 better bands than GnR on that list. I'm pretty sure they make top 8 on the strength of Appetite alone, but maybe that's just me.

The best any band's done so far is get 50%. I figured there'd be more consensus on a couple of these.

As far as Greatest American Rock Bands go there are only 3 real answers that are quite beautifully in opposition to each other musically : Nirvana, The Beach Boys and The Eagles. Now I would LOVE to add a fourth to that list to represent the NYC punk scene in the 70's but I'm stuck and having a difficult time trying to pick one among two or three...

There is no excuse for leaving out Jimi Hendrix. He was in the Band of Gypsys. This should at least give him an entry into this retarded poll.

Also, anybody who votes for the Eagles is a moron. There's nothing great about them. Sorry to offend.

Seriously? Blink-182 isn't even close to the same league as the Doors. The Doors sound is still unique.

Comparing most of those bands to the Doors is like comparing Glitter to the Godfather

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band
The Cars
Jefferson Airplane
Talking Heads
Blondie
The Ramones

among many others who I'd take over most of the choices in this poll.

Notice how a lot of these bands started out good, but descended into commerical banality? I'll add '80s faves ZZ Top, Beastie Boys, and Prince to that list.

Ramones should be the garage/punk entry. Or Stooges.

I took a seed list generated in the other thread. I personally don't think half the bands on this list should even be on here...but I didn't make the list. I just took other's suggestions. I don't think The Band is going to make the cut either way.

yeah... that's a distinct possibility.

I really dont see how anyone can question the VUs placement here.

Certainly not up there in terms of 'most popular american band', but when we're talking 'greatest american rock band' they most certainly have to be mentioned (WAY too influential not to be mentioned)

Nice list. Missing Petty, ZZ Top and Ted Nugent. Replace The Band (canadian), Boston (REO was better, and they mostly sucked), and REM (for being whiny, rockers aren't whiny).
