Muscle Car Myth?

A while ago at a poker table some guy, who had been drinking (a state in which people tend to exaggerate things), told me that he was on the freeway back in the mid 1980's driving along side what he believed to be a stock corvette. They were going about 70-75 mph. Then the guy in the stock corvette floored it and started spinning and smoking his tires before taking off like a shot. I was just wondering if it is possible to do a burn out in a stock corvette (or any stock car) starting at such a high rate of speed?

absolutely. take a car with that much torque and you can spin the wheels a good amount at almost any speed.

hell, my old car (a '91 acura legend with under 200HP) could get some wheel spin at around 35-40 MPH.

so a stock corvette which is much lighter and has over double the HP and torque could almost certainly light the tires at 60-70MPH. especially if its a manual and you can rev it and drop the clutch.

I used to get tire chirp shifting from 1st to second around 25 in my 92 Plymouth Sundance with 100 hp.

It would be much easier with crappy tires as well.

Yeah my dad once had a late 60s vette and he could spin the tires in every gear.

He said he would have kept it, but he didn't like the way the radio worked... Dad was real picky about cars.

I had a 96 supra turbo that could burn right through third gear at about 75. That car was a little over 3000 lbs and had a little over 300 hp i believe.

I'm doubting it because corvettes have such wide sticky tires. If it was a late 60's vette, then I'd believe it. I went for a high speed ride in an older stingray, the one with the 350 cu in, 350 hp engine. Man, that thing flew but I don't know about smoking tires by flooring it at 70. At 70 if the road is wet, you'll spin them.
