Beginner Books - 7 Card Stud

Read your suggestions on Texas Hold 'em books, wanted to know your suggestions on getting started with beginning - intemediate books on 7 card stud.

Roy West's book is the best for low-limit stud.

I've never read Roy West, and I'm not likely to. If you are going to play in a low-limit game with a significant ante, then I'd recommend Seven Card Stud for Advanced Players, especially the loose games section. Make sure it's the 21st Century Edition. Theory of Poker is also a must.

Curious why you aren't likely to read West? Is he the John Patrick of the poker world or something (thinks he's an expert but is really clueless)?

Also, would the book for advanced players be over my head since I'm just starting out? I do consider myself an intelligent guy though (at least intelligent enough to know that I shouldn't be playing poker in a casino environment yet).

Any other general poker book suggestions anyone?

The west book is frequently recommended by readers of these forums. If I'm not mistaken Andy's best game is 7cs. There is probably little to no new information for him in the West book. This may be the reason why he may never read the book.

Thanks for the info. I figured it was more likely that Andy was already a very educated player. I've heard only good things about West so I was hoping I wasn't being mislead. I Was thinking about getting his book. Doesn't he have some sort of workbook as well?

I'm not entirely sure of all the books West has published. As a beginner the West certainly won't hurt to pick up. The only other stuff by him that I know of for sure is his column in Card Player Magazine.

To the best of my knowledge, West has written two poker books.

He co-wrote McEvoy's first tournament book back in the 1980's (now out of print). Not to be confused with Mac's "Tournament Poker", BTW.

And of course, "7 Card Stud-42 Lessons". Which is geared towards 10-20 and lower.

Roy West may not be Chip Reese but he's sure not John Patrick either.

Build your 2+2 library. And Cooke. And Ciaffone. Then get everything.

Heck, I got something of value out of one of Russ GCA's rants. Something I use every night. It may be worthless to someone else but has been very worthwhile for me.


Get the books, study 'em. Think about the game. Repeat
