View Full Version : Five Strange Things About My New Apartment

1. Was Mike Brady the architect of the master bathroom?

There appears to be something missing here.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v720/DynastyPoker/003_23A.jpg

I've got the standard sink, counter, and mirror in the middle. On the right, there is the tub/shower. You can see the left wall in the mirror image (far right of the picture). But, no toilet?

Well, not really, of course.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v720/DynastyPoker/005_21A.jpg

The master bedroom toilet is basically in a closet to the left of the bathroom.

So, what's missing? There's no door. There's an archway between the bathroom and bedroom but no door to seperate them. That seems odd to me.

2. Mirror above kitchen sink

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v720/DynastyPoker/007_19A.jpg

I'm not sure what inspired somebody to put a mirror directly above the kitchen sink. What's it supposed to be used for? Am I supposed to be watching myself while I wash the dishes?

3. There's a second bedroom

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v720/DynastyPoker/027_00A.jpg

All my moving is done. Every piece of furniture I own is in place.

It appears I have some shopping to do.

4. My patio/balcony furniture

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v720/DynastyPoker/013_13A.jpg

It seems a bit too much for patio furniture. But, it'll be nice in the fall and spring.

5. Too many washers and dryers

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v720/DynastyPoker/008_18A.jpg

This picture isn't very good. On the left, you can see the washer and dryer I bought four years ago. On the right, you can barely make out the washer and dryer which came with the new apartment.

So, my washer/dryer has basically become a table. Any Vegas residents want to buy a washer/dryer on the cheap?

The mirror above the kitchen sink is like the strangest thing ever. I've been thinking, but I can't fathom how someone would think that's a good place for a mirror.

I just moved into an apartment and my strangest discovery was no sprayer thingy on the kitchen sink. And my garbage disposal must be about 300 horsepower..

One good discovery - I have perfect line of sight from the toilet to the TV...

What'll really throw you for a loop is when, in like 6 months, you're washing your hands in someone else's kitchen sink and you'll try to check yourself out only to see that there's no mirror.

Thats how the bathrooms are set up in Europe, except the toilet sits in a totally different room then the bathroom.

My mother has her entire kitchen mirrored. Its a gaudy italian tradition.

Congrats on the new place.

Congrats on the new place, hope the move went smooth. You do have a few oddities in the place, the mirror above the sink being the most standoutish. Replace it with a Degas print Some examples (http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/degas/ballet/) .

The 'velvet' overcushy patio 'chair' is, at least to me, revolting. For some reason it reminds me of all the bad fashion and clothes from the mid-1970s. Sell that thing to a casino and get some well made Rattan style chairs or 'love seat'. Good ones are very comforable and cool in the summer.

That looks exactly like my apartment in Green Valley -- closet toilet, Roman tub, the five lights (they call it "Hollywood lighting" in my complex), archways, mirror in the kitchen, everything. Same builder I guess.

But make sure, when you move out, somebody from that office walks through the place with you. I didn't know any better, and they billed me for damages that I know weren't there.

regarding #1 -

It's nice if you want to take a shower and don't have to deal with the stink of someone's [censored] from 5 min. before (cause they all rush to dump that in there if you say you're going to take a shower)

I know they do - it's what I used to do for fun /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I looked at a bunch of apartments on one of my recent trips to Vegas, and I saw the same "no bathroom door/archway" business. I specifically remember it at an apartment complex called Camden Del Mar. Maybe this is something peculiar to Vegas?

My house is this way. I do have a door that leads to the toilet room on the main level from the living room, and a door that shuts the toilet room (with a sink) off from the shower, and the archway to the bedroom. It is nice, because you can use the pisser while someone is taking a shower.

To the left, you can see Bally's, the Bellagio, the Flamingo, and a small piece of Caesars Palace.

Straight ahead, you can also see Imperial Palace and Harrahs.

That's a regular indoor couch on the patio right? So it never rains there I take it?

On a related note, is water expensive?

Las Vegas was built in the desert, btw.

[/ QUOTE ]

Among other common misconceptions about Vegas is this one.
Yes, Las Vegas is a desert now, but it hasn't always been one. Las Vegas means "The Meadows."

excerpt of LV history lesson (http://www.sincitychamberofcommerce.com/las_vegas_sin_city_history.htm):
[ QUOTE ]
The completion of the main railway, linking Southern California with Salt Lake City in 1905, established Las Vegas as a railroad town. The availability of water made Las Vegas an ideal refueling point and rest stop.

[/ QUOTE ]

Then gambling became legal and soon after that quickie divorces... low and behold! The stigma of sin was born.

Then the Hoover dam was built and Vegas grew larger.

Along with some natural springs in LV, the city gets some of the run-off from the Colorado River, which created seasonal meadows (b/c Vegas is a flood plain). Urban development channeled and poluted that water and thus Vegas became more and more pure desert.

But we're getting some meadows/ wetlands/ wash back...

None of that stuff requires rainfall. And in fact only Arizona has less raingfall/year than Nevada.

And I already feel I argued this point farther than I should have or wanted (or cared... I was just making a point about someone asking about rainfall in Vegas, for gosh sakes ... I hate the dang internet, everyone's a frickin expert).
