Keeping passwords on your comp

Please post reasons that could convince my friend as to why keeping your passwords stored on text documents in your harddrive is a not so great idea.

Why try to convince him? It sounds like he's already made up his mind. I'm sure he's very aware that anyone who accesses his computer will have access to those passwords. He's a big boy, he can make his own decisions.

Use Password Safe (http://passwordsafe.sourceforge.net/) instead, it's much better.

I can not say enough good things about keywallet which I think is similar freeware to password safe.

I am using KeePass (http://keepass.sourceforge.net/) which is pretty much the same thing as PasswordSafe or Keywallet. Additionally I created a pretty bulky passphrase for it using Diceware (http://world.std.com/~reinhold/diceware.html) in conjunction with a USB thumb drive (So it requires both the pass disk and the passphrase). I think it's one of the better solutions if you want to store your passwords. Why you'd store your passwords in plain text is beyond me.

Of course you're not immune to key-loggers.

you actually are kind of immune to keyloggers with keypass since you never have to type out the passwords if it pastes them directly to your clipboard.

How do you input the password to open Keypass without typing it or without storing it in plaintext on your computer?

You do have to type (or copy/paste) the master password.

All of the pwords saved within can then simply be dragged and dropped.

I don't know too much about keyloggers but even if a hacker was to acquire your master pword, he would then have to be able to access the actual keepass, keywallet or passsafe program on your computer to get to the individual account pwords.

But, I am sure you are all going to tell me that it is fairly easy for someone who has a keylogger on your machine to also be able to remotely operate your desktop from their puter. eh? Geez, now what do I do?
