I'll be in Vancouver a few days next week. Hoping to go to River Rock casino Saturday night for some low limit HE, like 4-8. Are the waiting times long? How is the 4-8 game there?

Any advice would be appreciated.

hey there maryfield,

RR is the biggest and best room we have to offer in these parts. the games are generally pretty good, usually loose and somewhat aggressive (although it seems to vary wildly from table to table and night to night).

link to vancouver pokerrooms on the Poker Wiki (http://poker.wikicities.com/wiki/Vancouver)

definately, take the number down from the link and call ahead as the line-ups can be unpleasant on saturday night. if you get there by 6pm you should be fine. otherwise it can be upwards of an hour or two. there is a good electronic board system with pagers so waiting isn't terrible. there is a nice bar right beside the poker room. also the food at the casino is actually quite good (lots of quality asian cuisine). order a hoegarden beer as they are excellent.

be sure to get outside while your in Vangroover. An afternoon drive up to Whistler and back provides breathtaking views of the ocean and mountains (a definate must if you have a couple hours). Or take a day trip to Bowen island and have lunch (a quick ferry ride). Or rent kayaks in Granville Island (right near downtown) and paddle up False Creek (beautiful and relaxing way to see the city and get away from the crowds a bit). You don't even need to know how to paddle...it is very protected and easy.

Just a couple of ideas....i am sure i could come up with a bunch more if you had a specific activity in mind.

hope you enjoy your trip,
cheers

Damn I love whistler!!!!

I was in Whistler last december for an 8 day ski trip and we made it down to RR 3 times on that trip and I must say it is a very nice establishment. I mostly played craps but I did spend some time at the poker tables but they were all weekday sessions. The waits during the week were either non existent or very short, and the games were very loose and some of them were highly aggresive even at the lower limits. There are lots of asian players in these games and my only gripe was that the dealer was allowing some of them to speak in a language other than english. This may not be a rule in canada due to the diversity up there but I hate other languages at the table.

That rule is very loosely enforced at river rock, especially when it comes to cantonese. I wouldn't worry too much about it though, as there'll typically be at least 3 cantonese/mandarin speakers at your table regardless, and they don't get along well enough to collude against whitey or to sit passively by as someone else tries to collude.

Wait times are pretty good at the rock lately, although 4/8 is probably the most popular game spread (that or 1/2 NL). On a friday/saturday night you're probably looking at 30 minutes to an hour, any other time and the wait should be minimal.

At 25 tables, RR is the biggest room in Canada (for now). It offers a ton of tiny limit action, the wait list is automated but on a Saturday night you will be waiting a while. The 1-2 NL action is what draws the crowds. It's nuts. Lots of crappy players and WPT wannabees. Lots of Asian kids trying to look like the coolest(and toughest) guy in the world, and they usually play like degenerate gamblers. You'll love it. It's a pushover. I am surprised more people do not fly up from the states just to beat the crap out of RR. It's close to the airport and always rocking.

English only at the table, no xxxxin sputnik. I'm sure you're just talking about perogies and snow and xxxx but let's keep it down please.

Thanks much for the help guys. I'm going to be at an airport hotel Saturday night and it seems to be pretty close to River Rock. I should be able to get there early enough to avoid the long wait. Or I'll get on the list and eat dinner while I wait.

I'll be staying with some family before that so I'll see what they have planned - but the Whistler trip is something I'll definitely suggest.

Thanks again.
