I'm not familiar with either players, SB checked the turn the second it hit if that matters for anything

I think you played it fine. You represented on the flop, got called....SB smells like a flush draw - which makes even more sense when he checked the turn looking for the trap. I have no problem w/ check/fold after the flop.

Why didn't you raise pre-flop? That way you define your hand better post-flop. Plus (hopefully) it gets rid of two random spades that were playing loose. You basically gave up on the hand on 4th street. If you had any questions you should have bet on 4th, but the way you played it, the fold on the end is correct.

I would bet on the turn as well. After the flop, it could be that your opponent(s) have TP?K and will be scared of you hitting the flush on the turn.

If he check raises you on the turn, you'll know where you stand more so (I think) than you do when the villian pushed on the river (is he overbetting the flush, or trying to steal the pot?). However, by betting you take down the pot there.

Finally, many people will religiously slow play until the river, so if you bet on the turn, he may just call, allowing you to check behind on the river when he goes for the check raise.
