Wow. This is an amazing list. I can only make minor disagreements. YYY's - Fever to Tell and Hole-Live Through This are either not warranted or a little high up (re: Hole).

No Alice in Chains/Sunny Day Real Estate/ Flaming Lips is a travesty.

I can't see why a critically acclaimed album like Modest Mouse - Moon and Antartica doesn't make the cut.

Also, not to be greedy, some love for Broken Social Scene or even the Arcade Fire. It's probably too early to say for these albums.

I disagree with one or two hip hop albums, but for the most part they're dead on, they did they're best job with this IMO.

Discuss.

This list is automatically credible due to the presence of both The Smiths and PE in the top 5. I have issues with PJ Harvey in the top 10, but mostly minor quibbles after that. A pretty thorough job. And they picked the right Modest Mouse album.

Achtung Baby should be all over my nostalgia clutches--I was a junior in high school when it came out--but there's just no denying it sucks. Same with Dookie. I could practically see where I was living at the time on the album cover, but the CD is just boring. 1 through 6 are brilliant. The rest, meh.

No Chili Peppers, STP, or Alice in Chains? I also feel that Incubus should have been on this list somewhere with SCIENCE. Also, if they were only going to put one Rage CD on it, it definitely needed to be the self titled one by far. The fact that Ten is in the 90s is a complete joke also. Not a big fan of this list.

Dan Rutter
06-29-2005, 01:52 PM
Alice in Chains should have at least one album on, along with STP. Mad Season's Above, Layne Staley's other band, should be on the list. GNR's Appetite should be up higher, but the Use Your Illusions should be even higher.

But these lists are always wrong.

NMH rules, and the people who made this list obviously recognize that fact, or they wouldn't be on the list. The albums that made the top 20 are all transcendent artists (with the exception of maybe Nas, imho).

Fact is, a semi-relevant band that only put out two albums isn't gonna hang with the powerhouses, even if it is supposed to be a top "albums" list.

How can you have such a list that does not include the Joshua Tree (but includes Actung Baby)? The Joshua Tree is U2's best album, and any "backlash" against it is due to overplaying and not the quality of the music.

I also agree with prior comments about Pearl Jam. I still think Ten is one of the best albums I've ever heard.

How can you have such a list that does not include the Joshua Tree (but includes Actung Baby)? The Joshua Tree is U2's best album, and any "backlash" against it is due to overplaying and not the quality of the music.

Pretty solid. Personally I would have Kid A as #1, I would flip positions of the two PE albums. I also think Terror Twilight should go where slanted and enchanted is. Check Your Head instead of Paul's Boutique. Surrender instead of Dig Your Own Hole. Hole should not have made this list. I would also put Sinead O'Connor's I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got on there.

Overall solid though.

"76. Belle & Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister"

this above is the best in the list for sure.

magnetic fields' charm of the highway strip is the best album since 1985.

loveless is my bloody valentine's weakest effort. the ecstasy and wine collection is their best work.

the pogues are one of the most annoying awful bands ever.

they have big black and slint who are both awful but nothing from unwound who were so amazing.

So one would have to accept the fact 90% of all the best music is on major labels? Not to start a huge argument, but this simply cannot be true. That the people who choose what bands to sign to the biggest labels also have the best taste is just impossible for me to fathom. Many great bands either have no desire to be on big labels or do not fit the mold commercially. Only a very small sample appear here.

There are many many great albums that were released on smaller labels in the last twenty years. Not really surprised a mag like Spin doesn't include them but it calls the whole enterprise into question, IMO.

Hi,

First post, so why not make it on the OOT?

I think this list is pretty damn good. Not everything here is my cuppa, but tough to say that this list is not representative of the best of the last 20 years.

A few comments:

91. XTC's Skylarking - vastly underrated. One of the most influential albums of that time.
88. Stereolab's ETK - I actually have this, thought I was the only one, would be amazed if anyone here has heard any of their stuff. Not even that good anyway.
87. Blur's Parklife -- One of the best ever, I don't see how this is the only Blur entry where there are so many Britpop mid to late '90s entries. Top 10 for sure. And throw in a couple other albums of theirs.
76. B and S If Your Feeling Sinister. Mike l. says its the best in the list. They are a great Scottish band and it's cool to see them here but Boy With The Arab Strap is better IMO. Even Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like A Peasant (FYHCYWLAP) could be here. Tigermilk as well.
19. Hole - I second someone's surprise at this entry. Top 100 since '85?, not a chance.
18. GNR AFD. This is definitely a monster album. At Uni in '88-89 this was huge but who would actually listen to this now. Rank is fine.
11. U2. Of course, this has to be Joshua tree w/Baby lower somewhere perhaps. Even Zooropa wasn't bad.

Can't disagree with Public Enemy's rankings (2/21). Those two PJ albums are great. The list, as mentioned, is very tight from 1-100. However, Kid A/OK Computer...I like Radiohead but that's a bit much isn't it? After the great Pablo Honey the music is more mood setting than anything else but it always amazes me how highly regarded these guys are.

Shajen, you're not the only one, Nirvana's got one good album. Can't deny the influence on everyone else though.

I think redrooski is right, you have to at least throw in Red Hot Chili Pepper's Mother's Milk somewhere, and surely Live's Throwing Copper makes it as well. But my two big omissions have to be Prodigy's Fat of the Land and The Streets' Original Pirate Material. Possible others, Ocean Colour Scene, Gomez, Suede...but I'm too obviously a Britpop fan.

Ok, off to politics...then philosophy....then eventually some actual poker.

Now I know what's been bothering me about this list. It's clearly geared towards say the 18-24 year old crowd who probably began listening to new music in the post-Nirvana early nineties at the earliest. So, the list has practically nothing from 1985-90. I admit that this was a pretty bleak period, but for a lot of us this post-new wave, pre-grunge era was all we had and we had to sort through and find the gems.

You might laugh at the huge albums of those days like INXS' Kick, or Paul Simon's Graceland but not to rank some of this stuff ahead of the freakin' Meat Puppets is wrong. Also, stuff like Love and Rockets, Big Audio Dynamite, Shriekback, lol, all that happy crappy laid the foundation for a lot of what is on this list.

Finally, there is one giant omission I remembered. There is no serious discussion of "alt-rock", which a large part of the list encompasses, without including the 1991 release of Primal Scream's Screamadelica. There is no getting around this album for quality and influence. It's like having a top hard rock list without the first Led Zep album.

DeathbySuckout

84. Soundgarden - Superunknown - should be Badmoterfinger

53. Rage Against The Machine - The Battle Of Los Angeles - no way. This should be the s/t CD

38. A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory - I kinda lean towards Midnight Marauders

25. Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral - WHAT!?! Pretty Hate Machine

13. Husker Du - New Day Rising - should be Candy Apple Grey

They don't belong here, but does anyone like Kings Of Convenience as much as I do?

loveless is my bloody valentine's weakest effort.

Mike,

I love all of MBV's (limited body of) work, but I still think "Loveless" is their crowning achievement. I feel the same way about Sonic Youth's "Daydream Nation".

Does this list really surprise anyone. It is pretty much exactly what I would expect a bunch of rock critics to pick, which does not mean that many of the albums are not masterpieces.

I have huge issues with the ordering as I am sure do most here. I bet each of us who listen to a lot of music can name a dozen albums on the list that we personally think are overrated and another dozen or so underrated ones that didn't make the cut. On the one hand this makes arguing these things a pointless waste of time. On the other hand I am always interested to hear what other people like and don't like as I often learn something new and hear about great music that had fallen under my personal radar screen.

No Pink Floyd??

Also Metallica and Rage Against The Machine is far to low on the list.

This is a good list. I wonder if the people yelling "this list sucks" realize that they're just saying that it doesn't represent their specific taste. I thought it did a good job of managing a lot of different genres, and balancing mainstream and obscure bands as well.

A few problems I had with it:

Not having any Tool on there is an unforgivable mistake. Same deal with RHCP. Just doesn't make sense.

Lauren Hill's album should be higher up in my opinion.

Notorious BIG's Life After Death deserved a spot, although there are some weak links in it and Ready to Die, a better album, is already listed, so I can understand why they wouldn't give him two spots.

Tupac deserves a spot.

I would have liked to see the Flaming Lips on there.

The Marshall Mathers LP deserves to be higher.

Kanye West is far too high up.

Also, I think the Offspring- Smash should have clocked in somewhere in the 80's or 90's.

That's all I can think of for now.

Not a bad list overall, i could go over a number of odd omissions or misplacements but ill just state one...

WHERE THE [censored] IS GOO???????

Not including:

NIN - Pretty Hate Machine
The Cult - Sonic Temple
Black Crowes - Shake Your Moneymaker

is pretty ridiculous and unforgivable. Also, where is Metallica - And Just For All, and U2 - The Joshua Tree? Obviously, MOP is Metallica's best album, but AJ4A is the album that burst metal into the mainstream.

I would have added STP - Core and 311 - Music, to the the list as well. I would put Bush on this list before any Live ablum too.

this list is just like every other top 100 list magazines or tv shows put out. It sucks

agreed. lists like this are incredibly stupid as a person's taste in music varies vastly from person to person.

i can tell you i would probably hate listening to most of these albums.

no Sublime or RHCP either. gimme a break.

I was all set to get mad and call you names, but I agree with the gist of this post. Tupac really never put together one masterpiece album. Almost all of them had a couple of great songs mixed in with a lot of lower quality filler. 75% is too high, but it seems like every album of his has a lot of weaknesses, so I wouldn't know which one to nominate.

The fact that Uncle Tupelo's "No Depression", a record that started an entire musical movement, is not on here destroys the credibility of this list.

Anything by Uncle Tupelo. I can't believe that they were omitted. I do not like rap/hip-hop, but I understand the influence many of those groups had and thus have no problem with their inclusion. Anyone who knows music knows UT had a very large impact. Leaving them off is bad.

My biggest surprise is that The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin, which Pitchfork said was the #3 album of the 1990s was omitted from this list.

PBob bring up a great point about UT as well. But, then again, he doesnt like YHF, so, I take his Jeff Tweedy related comments with a grain of salt

Good list.

Missing a few, though.

Alice in Chains - Dirt
The Offspring - Smash
Mother Love Bone - Apple

Appetite, Ten, and Master of Puppets could be higher - Nevermind could be lower.

Nice list, though.

Achtung Baby?

The transition/reinvention U2 went through from JT to AB was very impressive. How many bands can pull that off and still make 2 great records? The Beatles? Radiohead (The Bends to OK). Wilco (Being There to Summerteeth). The list is short.
