Ok...I got laid off last month and i am bored as hell. I send about 5 -10 resumes a day but i need other things to do to kill time. In between playing SNG's and using my blockbuster video pass...can anybody help[ me compile a list of things to do before i start working again or an extra source of collecting income other than grinding it out? I live in so cal...

First thing to do is sign up for unemployment, it screws over the company that just laid you off.

Use it as an opportunity to get in shape. Workout or run everyday, if you don't already.

You could take up a hobby, like drinking.

Depending on your financial situation, you could travel. Use the trip as an employment search and you may find a way to deduct a portion of it.

1) Move out of So Cal.

2) 5-10 resumes a day?!?! WTF?! What industry are you in?
Try to spend a little time networking. Check out "Linked-In" if you have anybody in your work history that liked you it could help out.

3) Talk to a few, 3 or 5, recruiters. You intervew them, not vice-versa. Find one that seems clued in and not just interested in making mass amounts of nearly random job placements.

4) 5-10 resumes a day?!?!?!? WTF AGAIN?!?! Try spending a little time being more selective. You are quite possibly giving off the impression of being desperate for employment; and desperation is rarely a trait you want to play up.

Does unemployment pay a % of your previous wages to everyone in the program

Call up some marketing research places and sign up for their studies. You can get paid $50- $100 for tasting pizza, talking about shaving gel, etc. And don't lie to try to qualify for a study - you never know what they are looking for.

I took advantage of all my free time when I was laid off to learn some new skills via home study. I would get up around 10, hit Starbuck's, then go down to the local beach and read my textbooks. Great way to learn and pass the time.

Its usually ( are there any exceptions? ) a % of previous wages up to a maximum $ amount; these payments are made for a certain number of weeks based on number of weeks you worked since last collecting, up to a maximum number of weeks. I think many states the maximum is around 6 months now.

I think the point is it sounds like you are blasting out your resume instead of networking into companies. Go to the networking meetings they have there - proabably at night. There are probably job boards tied into the some of the networking groups too.

I think sending out a lot of resumes is fine. But you really should follow up on every single one. Send to specific people, not to HR departments, and then call the person directly to follow up.

There's gotta be a few.

Another good thing is to call your college alumni dept. and get the names of alum who work in southen cal, or work at a particular company. That's usually a good "in" into the company.

Go to the movie theater all day long, and see a stretch of:

Star Wars at noon
Batman at 2:30
Mr. and Mrs. Smith at 5
Cinderella Man at 7:30
Land of the Dead at 10

GREAT way to spend a day. And eat as much popcorn as possible.

What are the requirements to get unemployment? Can you get it if you are fired?

WELL..it depends what you get fired for. My friend came into work drunk and they fired him. He applied for EDD insurance and started collecting. About 1 month later the company tried to contest the checks so they took him to court. Since the supervisor who fired him got fired himself he totally denied the challenge. I know alot of people who got took to court and won. I think its really hard for an employeer to win in the employment courts.
