My Spirit Mountain Casino 6th Anniversary Tournament Series Trip Report

Thursday October 11th

The tournament series starts tomorrow but they have a no-limit tourney tonight. The tourney is a $25 buy-in with unlimited rebuys for $20 for the 1st 3 rounds (20 minutes each). You start with T400 in chips and blinds of 25-25. The 1st round you get T400 for a rebuy but you must have less then T400. The 2nd round you get T500 but must have less then T500. The 3rd round you get T600 but must have less then T600. There is a $20 addon at the end of round 3 for T1500. I hope to minimize the rebuys but for some reason my gambling spirit is high and my luck is not. My 1st rebuy occurs when I call a mini-raise with 67s, hit a flop of 568 and call an all-in raise from J5 and KK. I am the favorite but I don't hit my many outs. My next rebuy occurs when I raise all-in with AKs and get 2 callers. One with AKo and the other with KQo. Yeah the KQo hit a Q on the flop and turn and I missed my royal flush draw on the river. I did a few other rebuys in round 2 and 3 when my chips fell below the thresholds. Nothing special in round 4 (100-200). In round 5 (200-400), I won a decent pot and I am up to 5100. My last hand occurs when it is folded to the SB. He calls the 200. I look at my cards and decide not to raise with 54s. Flop comes 2 of my suit. Checked to me and I bet T1000. SB calls. Turn is checked. River brings a flush plus a 1 card straight if you hold the King. SB goes all-in and crazy me decides he may have a King or 32s. He has T6s. I am out 33rd of 53 players.

Friday October 12th

Todays tournament is a $120 buyin limit tourney starting at noon. No rebuys. You get T2000 and blinds start at 25-25. 30 minute rounds. I decide to arrive early and play some 1 table satelites. They have $25 and $45 satelites. I play a $25 limit and hit a few cards and end up in 3rd. 1st pays $120 and 2nd/3rd gets $40. I also play a $25 NL satelite. As we get headsup they decide to start increasing the blinds every hand since they need to clear the poker room so the tourney can begin. We decide to split 1st/2nd.

I sit down at noon at my table. Tourney is sold out with 166 players. Things start okay as I win a few minor pots early. In round 2 I decide to call a re-raised pot with JJ from the SB. The flop is low and I bet out and only get the re-raiser to call me. Turn is a Q and I bet and again 1 caller. River is a K and we both check and the re-raiser shows AK and rivers me. I am down to 1775. Round 3 I make a near critical mistake on the final hand of the round. I raise with KJo from cutoff to steal the blinds. Only the button calls. Flop is 3 spades. My K is a spade. I bet and get raised. I call. Turn is a blank and I check/call. River makes me a straight. I bet out and get called. Button shows 87s for the flopped flush. I am left with T275 with a 20 minute break to think about it. Round 4 begins with 75-150 blinds. I have 3 hands until I hit the blinds. 2nd hand I raise with not much and to my delight everyone folds. I win another small pot but then I try to raise against the same 2 blinds with Q3o. I get 2 callers plus the blinds and muck after seeing the flop. I am now left with T275 again. I am UTG and raise with J4s. Guy next to me with another short stack raises and I figure I am dead. He shows K6s of a different suit. Flop brings me a 4 flush and a gutshot. I hit my flush and win the pot. Next hand I am dealt KK in the BB. I get 4 way action and get 1 caller to the river. I end the round with T2800. My table busts as does my next table. My 3rd table I am dealt AA twice in 5 hands. Both times winning a decent pot. Once I hit a set but got no postflop action. Made a mistake when a short stacked raised from early position but I didn't re-raise with A9o. I would have won an easy pot and it wouldn't have hurt if I lost it. A few tables later the blinds are 300-500. We are down to 30 or so players. They pay 16. I raise with AJs and get re-raised by someone who has no more chips. She shows JJ and I am fortunate enough to river an Ace. A few hands later my KK wins a nice pot with a flopped set. I end the round with T13100. Around this time, we are getting close to breaking to 2 tables and everyone is tightning up except the table chip leader. The chip leader on my table is to my right and mixing things up pretty well. We finally break to 2 tables and I am one of lower stacks with 13k. With 500-1000 blinds I win a key hand with 77. I am in the BB. UTG raises. Only the SB calls. I also call. Flop is T52. I figure a good flop for my 77. Checked to UTG who bets. I check-raise and I am called. I bet the turn and check the river which is an Ace. UTG shows 44. A bit later I pickup AK, raise get called by the chip leader and raise his flop bet on a Ace high flop. Around this time the rounds jump to 700-1500 blinds and a 100 ante. We are down to 18 players. 2 more and we have dinner break and we are in the money. A critical hand for a few players come up next. UTG raises to 3k. Someone calls all-in. I muck KQo. Guy next to me calls as does the chip leader. Flop is 346 rainbow. There are bets and raises. The original raiser is also all-in. The chip leader has folded. The original raiser shows QQ. Next guy has 99. Guy with chips left has KK. Turn is a 7. River is a 5 for a straight on the board. A monster pot split 3 ways. Bad beat. The QQ guy ends up in 6th. The KK guy ends up in 12th. A few hands later I raise with KK UTG. Only the BB calls. Flop includes an Ace. He bets and I fold. He shows AQ. That drops me to 8700 and we get to 16 players and the money. There are only 2 smaller stacks. After the dinner break the guy to my right ends up with 1 T500 chip with blinds 1000-2000 and antes of T200. He is the SB. He antes his T200 and posts the rest. Everyone folds. He survives his all-in when his SB hand beats my BB hand. He ended up in 7th place surviving several all-ins. My end came quickly after dinner. Early aggressive player raise. I re-raise with 77 with my final T6000. He shows A9s. He flops and turns an Ace and I end up in 15th place. I was relatively happy considering I was all-in 6 hours earlier.

Saturday October 13th.

Todays tournament is a $120 buyin no-limit tourney starting at noon. One $100 rebuy. You get T1000 and blinds start at 25-50. Rebuy gets T2000. 30 minute rounds. I play 3 satelites with no luck. On the 1st one I end up in 4th when I run into KK. I also end up in 4th in the 2nd one when my AA is cracked by JT on a TTx flop. The 3rd one ends when my K8s all-in steal attempt is called by the BB with AJs of the same suit. I hit the flop but he hits the turn.

I sit down at the tourney table and it looks like a tough one. Several players I have played with before including the lady that won yesterday’s tournament. She also busted me at the Orleans this past year in an evening NL tourney. 1st round I make a stupid play. I have 77 and I call a T150 raise from someone who had already raised 3 times. He flops a straight, checks the flop and the turn and silly me goes all-in and not surprisingly he calls quickly. Re-buy at table 17. Round 2 I pickup AKo and raise from the button. Yesterday’s winner re-raises all-in. I quickly call. She shows 77. Flop and turn are no help and the river is the beautiful Ace. River! I end the 2nd round with T3075. Next 2 rounds are boring. I lose some chips and at the break I have T2500 with blinds going to 200-400. I make some all-in steals early in round 5 to gain some chips and slowly lose my profits in the next few rounds. End of round 7 I am down to T3800. Blinds are up to 500-1000. I muck TT against an early position raiser. I am able to steal the blinds twice with cheese. Twice when I am in BB, UTG raises all-in in desperation. Both times I can't beat him. Soon after this I get moved to another table. There are about 2 minutes to go in the round and I have T3300, the blinds are about to be 700-1500 and the antes are going to begin. I raise with J9s and get called by the chip leader in the SB. Oh oh. He shows 97s and I double up. I end the round at T7600. We are down to 25 players. They pay 12 today since there were 118 entries. I am able to steal some pots and end the next round at T8800. We break down to 2 tables. I have 11k. We will play until we have 12 players. With blinds rising to 1500-3k and antes 300, my stack is shrinking quickly. I win 3 uncontested pots in a row with ATs, AQ and nothing from the BB. We are 6 handed on our table and 7 on the other table. I end the round with 15500. It is below average and not safe with blinds of 2000-4000 and antes of 400. I lose my BB hand when the chip leader raised and fortunately I mucked 83s against his AA. The next hand was probably a mistake. It was folded to me. With about 10000 and the BB also reasonably short stacked, I should have raised all-in with almost anything. I mucked my 65o. The next hand I am down to T7500 after posting the antes. The guy to my right has less chips then I. I pickup QQ. I can fold and hope that I outlast the shorter stack or I can raise all-in. The BB is the big stack on the table. I raise all-in. The SB thinks and thinks for a long time. He eventually calls. BB mucks a 95. SB shows AKs. SB flops a flush. I bust out on the bubble. There was talk when we were down to 16 about giving 13-16 some money but one guy at our table wanted to give $599 to 3-16 and the rest of the money to 1-2. No deal was made.

All in all a fun few days. A 15th and a 13th place is better then a 166th and 118th although it doesn't pay much more!
