Is this a laptop or desktop?
What OS are you using?
Is vid card installed properly and drivers etc also loaded?

there is probably a function key + number combination that you need to press to toggle the video output

not enough info. not nearly enough. what is the monitor doing? is it mirroring the laptop's display? what have you checked? have you RTFM? what kind of laptop? what does "display" say? etc...etc...etc...

can't help if we can't see mang.

edit: first stop, hit up your laptop manufacturer website and check to see that it's even capable of doing dual displays. Anything past 2001 usually can. "good" home laptops can usually do it after 1998. if you still have any form of tech support, ask them... even an email after the war. has expired will sometimes produce results.

right click on desktop -> properties

click on the settings tab at the top

you should see two blue boxes. click on #2 and now a checkbox should appear at the bottom to extend desktop
