I just turned 21 and will be making my first trip to Foxwoods on Sunday. Forgive me for asking questions that have probably already been asked, but the search function isn't working well for me today. I play as high as 2/4 online. What limit would be of comparable difficulty at B&M? What guidelines should I follow in terms of tipping? Anything else I should know before I go?

If there is a standard beginners sort of post with the answers to these questions and others like it, I would appreciate a link. Thanks a lot.

I find 2/4 limit at foxwoods very comparable to 2/4 online. Your next choice would be 4/8 but I'd start at 2/4.

Most people tip at least $1 everytime they win a pot. If it's an unusually small pot you can get away w/out tipping(I always tip) or if it's an unusually large pot throw the dealer $2.

Also, B&M games are obviously more social than online and that's a good thing. People just love to show their cards when they fold, bluff, etc. and tell you how they play certain hands.

The only other difference is you have to pay attention, i.e, know when it's your turn to act, keeping track of the pot size, etc.

I might be there tomorrow so if you decide to go on Sat instead of Sun maybe I'll see you there.

Good luck.

Splash,

Good luck on Sunday. You'll probably feel comfortable up to 10/20 B+M - but for your first trip you'll probably want to play 2/4 or 4/8 first just to get the hang of things. I'd recommend signing up for 2/4, 4/8, the 5/10 kill, and 10/20 (I'm assuming we're taking limit holdem) - the waits can be horrendous especially on weekends. Get on the lists first then grab a bite to eat - you'll probably have over an hour wait if you arrive after noon. I usually play baby no-limit while waiting for a limit table.

Tip a white for a drink or if you drag a big pot. Wait for the dealer to push the pot towards you first.

I'd recommend taking the pike out to I395 in Worcester - the Providence traffic can hang you up for 30 minutes or more. The foxwoods site has the exact directions.

Sign up for the players club if you ever think you'll want to play the MTTs in the future. The comps from the card aren't worth it on it's own IMO.

Happy Birthday and Good Luck,

-Matt

(p.s. I live in Newton and wouldn't mind having someone to drive down with but I'm booked this Sunday. PM me if you'd like to ride share sometime.)

you dont want to go anywhere near that 5/10 kill or 10/20 until you have spent allot more time playin live limit holdem. I think the 2/4 and 4/8 at foxwoods are comparible to online play, but that 5/10kill game and ecspecially the 10/20 are not games that you just want to plop into without succeding a bit at the smaller levels. the 1/2 NL game is really soft, and can be a allot of fun.

First of all, you might find some useful background info here: http://poker.wikicities.com/wiki/Foxwoods

I don't play as high as $2/4 online, but the Foxwoods $2/4 plays not unlike the Pacific $0.25/0.50 games. Expect to see avg. 6-7 to the flop, and raising will do very little to keep people out preflop. 5-way preflop caps are not at all a rarity.

$4/8 has a little more variability, in that you may end up at a table with several reasonably good players and only 4 to the flop. Or you may get it capped 5 ways with AKs when no one else has an ace (which I only know because I made quad aces in that situation). /images/graemlins/smile.gif Hard to say.

As said above, GET THERE EARLY! Before 11:00 am on Saturday to feel good about things, although lately the good weather has thinned the field.

I usually toke $0.50 per pot at $2/4 and feel only slightly guilty. You can buy a $10 roll of halves at the cage when you cash in.

I might be down next weekend -- feel free to PM me if you go then too.

The 20/40 can be softer than online 2/4, surely the 10/20 will be. So, play where you are comfortable in your bankroll.

Tip a $1 when you win and there is a flop, that's fine regradless of the pot size. The rake is high, so, $1 tip is fine.

Bring something to protect your hand, especially if you are in the 1 or 10 seats. Something to put on your cards after you look at them so the dealer will not sweep them in at any point.

Good luck and play well, I very well may be there Sunday so who knows maybe I'll see you.

there is never a reason NOT to get a players card at a casino unless you are a blackjack card counter or something (and even those people get ones under fake ID so they're not suspicious when playing). it's free to sign up, takes 2 minutes and you'll get some discount room offers in the mail and (in Foxwoods' case) a $5 wampum coupon every single week. that combined with whatever comp you generate in your poker sessions is at least enough for a free lunch at the food court. they also run free gasoline promotions several times a year where you swipe your wampum at the kiosk and they randomly select winners. even if you only win once every year or so, it would be worth the effort.
