Hey all,
I recently moved from Seoul, South Korea back to a small town in canada of about 5000 people. I am going insane, I need to move. I came back to house sit for my parents while they were in Europe, they are back now and I need to leave. Here is what I am looking for in a place to live:

1. Nice whether - if I have to live through another Canadian winter I will kill myself.
2. By the beach - I love nothing more than relaxing by a beautiful beach.
3. Potential to get a decent job - I have a university degree in Molecular biology.
4. Fairly large city - I love big cities with lots to do.
5. Good internet connection for poker.
6. Decent rent for a studio/1bd room place (<$1000 mnth preferably).
7. I'd rather not need a car, I've never liked the hastles that come along with a car.

I make enough playing poker to survive (3-4 k/mnth) but wouldn't mind getting a decent job, I'm going nuts playing poker.

I have been looking into florida and Cali a great deal. I have never been to either but have heard great things and seem to have everything I'm looking for (mostly Miami and L.A. and San Diego), but I would move anywhere (I'm going to miami next week to check it out).

So, opinions???

I was also wondering do I need a visa or anything to live full time in the states, or is it just to work??? How difficult is it to get a job in the states being from Canada? Do employeers feel it's a hastle going through visa stuff hiring a Canadian? I feel like it would just be easier for them to hire an American.

Thanks for all opinions.

Malone

I've only been here a few months, but I like Miami so far. With that said, given the choice, I'd rather be on the Gulf Coast than Miami.

San Diego... let's see here:
1 - Check
2 - Check
3 - Check
4 - Check
5 - Check
6 - Uh oh... uhh... no
7 - Danger! Danger! Danger!

Sorry... you're good up until #6 in San Diego (and SoCal in general). Once you hit numbers 6 and 7, though, you're [censored].

Also, about the good internet connection... what the hell do you think this is, Canada? We have the internet everywhere here.

I also wanted to consider places other than the states.....which may have crappy connections like we have way up here in crazy canada /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks for the info.

Perhaps he should consider Vegas despite not having beaches. For the same amount, he can get a place more than twice as large.

So much biotech in cali you can't really go anywhere else with the weather/beach deal - assuming you want to get a job based on your degree...

Australia - not expensive, friends that have gone abroad there say it's like a mini US - without the overpopulation, pollution and it's friendly.

I love the southern part of FL.

Keep this in mind: you don't need to live in Miami to enjoy Miami. There are tons of cities in the Miami area. I don't live there but after college, that's probably the #1 place I'd want to live. I don't know about the costs.

In 2000, only 12.1% of all Canadian households had a broadband connection. In 2004, it is expected that the penetration rate will increase to 42.6%. The US, in contrast, is not expected to achieve a comparable penetration until 2006. The current penetration rate in the US is only 29.1%. By 2006 it is expected to reach 41.0%.

For 2003 Canada ranked fourth worldwide in terms of broadband households as a percentage of total households. The US held the tenth position with a 22.5%.

HUUUGE difference between % of houses with internet and which cities have them.

I'm not sure I understand your point- are you saying that despite the higher percentage of internet-enabled households, less cities will have access in Canada?
