Both countries show little respect of human rights so objectively none of them should be looked upon favorably.

The reason why China is more popular is that they are much better on PR than the US. As an example I went to the shop today. One newspaper has a large photo of a Chinese boy in a military uniform smiling and the headline say "China's century". When I see US on the front page is something like "Torture continues", "US officer aquitted for murder" etc.

You are reading the wrong newspapers. Mainstream newspapers aren't pro US. They are pro China...

One thing I think the US should re-institute is hard labor for prisoners. The gravy train that the current prison system is doesn't rehabilitate, and it doesn't punish anyone but the taxpayers.

Hard labor teaches discipline, hard labor can subsidize the cost of incarceration, and hard labor is a detterent.
