So I am getting off the T today in Boston, As I do, I kind of trip on the cord and the music stops. Then I turn around and there is some 17 to 19ish year old kid with my ipod in his hand. He says, "just keep walking. . . " There are maybe 15 people in the T with me. He has 3 friends with him, all athletic looking, skinnyish but muscular. I immediately realize that this is more of an attempted theft that was botched, like he didn't think I would notice or something (despite the fact that the music would obviously stop). What is your first instinct as to how to handle this situation?

Stick out your hand and thank him for picking up the device you dropped.

He wants you to walk away and not make a scene. Do the opposite. But be calm and non-threatening, give him an out. Make it clear that you are not accusing him of anything, so he can walk away from his botched job.

What T stop was this, by the way? I can't imagine any place would be empty during the morning commute.

my first instinct would be to get between the kid and the door/exit, if I wasn't already. probably say something like listen man, give it back and we'll both just walk away.

My first instinct would be to reach for the ipod, probably saying thanks.

If they didn't give the ipod to me, my next move would be to put it in his pooper, I mean, ask him why he was trying to steal my ipod in a loud voice. If that didn't work, it's on.

I hate a [censored] thief.

Ask him if he'd like your cell phone too, since he'll need to call some more friends. It's not the value of the item that would piss me off. I'd be just as mad if he took a $0.50 candy bar out of my pocket.

it takes some stones, but i like this line. i'd be pretty shocked if they tried to kick the crap out of you in a crowded T. it'd also be a little nerve-wracking leaving if they exited the train at the same time (can't imagine they would), but you could call the cops for an escort if you needed to.

Act like you didn't here what he said since you have headphones or earbuds on. Thank him for picking it up. When he doesn't give it back make a scene. Go apesh|t and yell something to get other people's attention. The main thing is he has friends but you have your lungs and good samaritians to rely on.

Don't do anything stupid to act brave by yourself, it is much better to go apesh|t and scream like a girl so everyone will look at you.

Then when you have everyones attention I would get in real close to the guy and Say something loud like "I just want the world to know how much Johnny and I love each other!" and then plant a big kiss on him. I bet you get your Ipod back after that.

Or shot. /images/graemlins/confused.gif

I've heard a lot about iPod theft on the T. I'll be sure to make sure I handle my stuff protectively next time I'm on.

BTW, I like the "thanks for picking that up" line that others have given. I doubt that many good samaritans would help since it is Boston but it might get attention and make people notice it so they can get a police profile or whatever.

Bastard.. I'd start a scene. He's not going to hurt you in public for a 300$ piece of machinery.. Unless he's a crackhead.

What is your estimate of the probability that he is carrying a weapon? Also, how big are you compared to his friends? I'm not the type of person to fight, but if someone tried to rob me I would definitely kick the sh1t out of them if I thought I could take them.

I pull my knife on him and take it to his throat, then calmly tell him to give me my ipod back before I [censored] push.

I guess it depends on physics of the situation. For one, I don't understand why they are not running away. Must have something to do with the layout of the "T".

But if they are still there, I'm just looking him in eye and saying "give it back" - real simple. Like I said, depends on physics some - I'm fairly big, so I think I could pull it off. If you're 5'9 and 165 pounds, maybe not.

Turn around, give him a cold look, and then say "I reraise" as you pull out your gun and point it squarely towards his nuts.

(Why did Tilt have to have so many horrible 1 liners)

after he said "just keep walking. . . ", I just kind of gave him a wtf are you serious look and said, "no, give it back now." He threw it one of his friends, so I turned to get it from the other guy, who then threw it back to the other kid. Now, here's what's interesting. . . the doors should have shut at this point, but they didn't, so obviously the driver of T must have been aware something was up. I kept saying, "just give it back. . . " and he kept saying he wasn't going too. Of the 4 kids, 3 were black and one was hispanic. I am sure none of them had weapons, and after the little hot potato stunt I was seriously pondering taking an any means necessary approach. The kid was sitting down the whole time as I was standing in front of him. . fortunately, and I am pretty sure race came into play here, another black guy started to say sternly to the kid, "Just give him back his ipod." I wasn't sure if he was with them or not, but after a little while I concluded he wasn't. After like a minute of both me and the other guy telling him to hand it over, he finally did. As I walked out of the train, the kid called me a "f*cking racist piece of [censored]. . ." which is really annoying and random since I was half asleep on the train and never said anything but "just give it back."

So, essentially, I just let him go. I could have pressed the emergency button on the T and had someone come out, which would ultimately get the mbta police involved, but I was just happy to get my ipod back and move on with the day. As soon as got off the train, I felt like a pus. I decided to just call teh mbta police and report it and since I work right outside of the aquarium stop, they said they wanted to send some people up to talk to me, since this has been a common occurrence as of late. I gave teh descriptions and they said they may come back and have me identify some photos, which would be cool.

Also, I think somehow this has to do with karma, and the fact that JV left his Old Navy New York jacket in the hotel during last years wsop. He wanted me to mail it to him and I didn't, partially because I am lazy and partially because I like the coat. I am convinced taht during the alcs this fall some kid tried to punch me because of teh coat. Fortuantely, he was too drunk to connect and got dealt with by the locals. You just can't get any respect in this city with new york paraphernalia. Even though it is not a yankees coat, I think it just makes people mad to see "New York" in big letters. . . . So, when I get off teh plane tonight in Vegas, one of my first priorities will be to give him back this damn coat. . .

Duke,

Something tells me if you were sitting in that seat instead of me, no one would attempt to touch your ipod, as you could have picked up any 2 by the neck at once /images/graemlins/laugh.gif Nate, who is about my size but probably tougher, would definitely have gone psycho and stirred [censored] up I bet.. .

I'd try the nice approach first...if that didn't work, and it's on, make sure your first punch counts and completely disables one of them....i'd try to make my second one count as well. Hit the first dude real hard right on the point of the nose...fight dirty too. Probably can't grab the black guys by the hair unless they had dreads, but you could grab the hispanic dude by the hair and put his head through a window...that leaves 2 on 1 and if you've completely disabled the first 2, the other's won't want any part of you. Hitting in the nuts/kneecaps/ankles is completely legal here.

My friend was walking through Brooklyn one day with his iPod held out in front of him (he was changing songs). Well, he obviously wasn't watching where he was going and bumped into a huge black (OMG RACISM, WHY AM I MENTIONING RACE) guy who grabbed the iPod from him and starting walking away. My friend is 6' 1" and maybe 150 soaking wet, and he described this guy as taller and very big. My friend goes after the guy (this is in the middle of the day and there are people everywhere) screaming at him to give his iPod back, hoping that somebody else on the street might get involved. Nope, everybody looks but nobody does anything, but finally the guy turns around and makes a deal with my friend. The offer? He punches my friend in the face, and in return, he gets his iPod back.

My friend agreed to the terms. He survived, and the guy kept his word.

What the hell?

If this is true, and I have no reason to believe it is not, this is the type of [censored] that makes me very pissed off. The fact that people walk around on this earth thinking that they have the right to either punch someone in the face or keep their property, just because they got bumped into.
