That doesn't answer the question.

Despite never having been in Texas, I'm sure you'll be able to find many good games.

I heard you can find Party Poker and maybe Poker Stars with a computer in Tx. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

You'll love Austin though. Great town. If I could live anywhere, Austin would be it. I'm sure there are games to be found. I know my sister and her bf used to play regularly in several home games.

I don't know who you ran into in Austin, but you're clearly insane. Austin has some of the hottest, coolest girls anywhere.

Bad advice, chicks in central Texas are very cool and laid back. Austin is fantastic. Hot women and tons of stuff to do especially if you like the outdoors. Nearest casinos are 4+ hours away, though.

You my friend are WRONG!!

the only legal poker in texas is down in eagle pass at the kicakpoo lucky eagle casino. It is actually a pretty nice room but winstar is a much shorter drive for me since I am in waco. You can make winstar in oklahoma in about 3:30 from austin.

Having lived in Austin, Dallas, and Houston, I dont believe this statement is true unless you own a Maserati.

yea maybe 4:00, I can make it from waco to winstar in 2:00 - 2:15 and I figured it is about 1:30 from austin. I left last friday at 6:30 and got to winstar at about 8:40 without even driving too fast even though I did manage to get a $205 speeding ticket at 4:00am on the way home.

It takes me 3:30 to get to North Dallas, let alone Oklahoma.

It will certainly be a change moving from California to Austin. However, you are coming to one of the coolest cities out there. Hope you enjoy the summer heat.

I know of a lot of home games my roommate goes to. PM me if you need info on them. There are a large amount of poker players here in the ATX.

There are tons of poker players here and lots of home games. Just check on a few of those sites, poker home games.com or whatever.

UT@Austin has lots of 18-22 yr old guys who think they are the next moneymaker.

That's mostly true. home games are legal and who says noone breaks the law, anyway?

I've heard of an illegal place down here in houston. The games are great.

No doubt Austin is a great town. I'm a native Texan and spent the last 4 years in Austin before relocating for work to Minneapolis, MN. I played in a few games and heard about many others so if you want some live action, there's plenty in Austin. No f'ing way it's 3.5 hours to OK. If you want to do a B&M trip, the best action is in Lake Charles, LA although that's 5.5-6.0 hours away. However, I heard they just opened a brand new place down there which means there are at least 3 poker rooms now - possibly 4.

I loved Austin, but the traffic is so horrible for that size of a town that it really takes away from the quality of living there. I had a 15 mile commute each way into a NW Austin suburb and on a good day that was a 45 minute drive - most were close to an hour and God help you if there's a wreck.

That said, I liked it so much, I'd move back in a heartbeat - although I'm finding that I'm really enjoying Minneapolis - especially the spring/summer/fall. I moved here in November, so I got here just in time for the winter - which totally sucked. But, it's nice to enjoy low 80's high's in late June when my folks in Austin are boiling at near 100 with 60+% humidity.

Have fun in Austin - you'll love it!

TomCollins

Minnesota in the summer is almost as bad as Austin. Low 80s, I think you must be referring to the humidity. Plus, you have to deal with the misquitos in the summer.

Trust me Tom - I've spent most of my 35 years living in Texas, including Houston (where I'm from). Summer here is light years better than in Texas. Check weather.com - it's 73 here now with a high today in the low 80's. Sure, it's a little humid, but if you are a Texan (from Houston) it's not bad. It makes a big difference when the temps cool down at night, which they don't do down there. I recall many a summer night in Austin where the overnight low temp stayed in the mid-high 80's. It just doesn't do that here. We've only had a few days so far this year where the mosquito's were out of control. But yes, that is a problem here during the summer time.

Of course, Minneapolis also has Canterbury Park, although I've only been about 4 times since I moved here 8 months ago...

I think its funny that players in the Austin/ San Antonio area dont consider the fact that it is a 5-6 hour drive (and $100 in gas) to Lake Charles or Winstar or wherever.... but they could hop a flight to Las Vegas for $99 and be there in 1 1/2 hours.

06-26-2005, 01:31 PM
I considered it, as did many of my other poker playing friends. In fact, I was in Vegas more frequently than in Lake Charles. However, back in the days before it was $2.15 for a gallon of gas and there were 3-4 of us going - it was MUCH cheaper to pile in the car and drive (and a fun road trip) than all paying for airfare, cabs, etc... going to Vegas.

The new place, L'Auberge du Lac, is a high class place. I was very disappointed to learn that they DO NOT have a poker room. They say they plan to add one in three months or so. Will have to wait and see.

Please let me know if you find one. I can't seem to find a flight out of Austin to vegas for less than $240 for a round trip. Southwest always has deals, but they are never available on the weekends...

Hey William!!! Yes, those were some good times road trippin' to get sucked out on by the loosey-goosies in LC. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Some of my fondest poker memories are from playing down there. Including the first trip where I was berated by an old lady for folding pocket tres pre-flop (3 bets to in MP) and would have ended up winning the pot. She couldn't believe that I folded a "Jackpot Hand". Gotta love LC...

kamelion and I play in a bunch of 2/5NL games. There are also 1/2 NL games. 5/10 limit. Some games are PLO. Basically, once you find one of these games, you'll get invited to a bunch more. The biggest, non-public game used to be 5/10 PLHE and 2/5 PLO, but that died down. Some of the 2/5NL games are thinking about running 5/10 NL/PL every once in a while.
The dealers at the games are great, people are nice, and its fun and profitable to play here.
Anyways, I very much enjoy living in Austin. I'm sure you will too.

That's o.k. I will be in Austin next week. I'll stop for Kolaches on the way to Houston. I will also plan to eat at Enchiladas Y Mas, Saltlick, Angie's, Threadgills, Fagnolia, Hyde Park Grill, Conan's and Kerbey Lane in the three days I'm there. I'll also be drinking at Baby A's (the straight one), Maggie's and Lovejoy's (assuming they're all still there) and anywhere else I'm dragged to. Alas, my favorite Austin bar (Charlie's Attic) shut down some years ago. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

That's right, they have a Chuy's in Houston. Don't miss out on the latest shirt, "Tex-Mex Hold 'Em". I'll be wearing mine in Vegas the end of the week.

Ah, I just had some Kerbey Lane migas last night. yum. Whenever friends come back in town it's always a challenge getting to all the places they want to go to eat.

If any of you Austin guys have any good, smaller limit games (2/4 to 4/8) shoot me a PM. My guys usually don't want to play for more than quarters.
