1/2limit (showing my buddy the ropes a bit), won 50. went to 400NL to blow it, got allin first hand with 33 vs aq and won. Played pretty well and ran hot, ended up at a grand. Got off the comp for awhile, then got bored and got back on and decided to play the 30/60 for a bit, and ran hot again.

Wow JR. No wonder that bird is so pissed off.

Please stop scaring me with those graphs. I still like to believe that bad things don't happen to good players.

First I hear about Santa Claus. And now this.

That's funny . . . I've had the same feeling a lot over the past week to ten days.

At least it's nice to see a healthy majority of responders are working the good side of the street.

I think I've found the losingest way to play at poker...I should have strung together a few wins by variance alone. Ick.

Me too. After 11k hands of barely breakeven play at 5/10, I'm up about 200BB in the last 5k hands or so. I don't want it to end.

i won 5/10 at 1.9BB/100 for 85,000hands
10/20 at 3.1BB/100 for 38,000hands
15/30 at 2.1BB/100 for 17,500hands

I hope this qualifies me as a winning player. My 20/40 and 30/60 results are so far disastrous, though, but my samples are still too small. There are several others who do mcuh better than me, but the players who are more than marginal winners are definitely minorities amongst the forum members.

This is like seeing a much nicer car than yours on the side of the highway to me. It's funny, cuz the bastard has a better car... on the other hand you start hearing noises youve never noticed from yours....

FWIW my first 6k of 5/10 has come to about .25 BB/100 and yes, I have been whining the whole way. Yes I feel guilty about that. Yes, I will continue to whine.

If I made a graph of my recent results it would look just like this.

I was up 3+BB/100 in my first 15k hands at 5/10. Then, breakeven for the next 23k hands (including a 330BB downswing). I thought I just sucked, so I started playing 2/4 and 3/6 at different sites while bonus whoring. Seeing so many good players have these big downswings makes me feel better. I need to step back to the 5/10 plate (or even 10/20). I'm such a pansy.

I wonder how many 200+BB downswings a risk-averse player like myself must go through before he can just shrug his shoulders and say 'oh well. no biggee'.

Bluffoon
06-24-2005, 11:02 AM
A nice sharp downswing doesnt bother me nearly as much as a long protracted slide. Last year I had a twenty five thousand hand b/e strectch that included a couple of +200bb dips and my current downswing is about 350bb and sixteen thousand hands. These long stretches of getting your brains beat in day after day get to me.

I'd tell you all about my recent 400BB upswing in 4k hands but i think it'd jinx me.

Sorry.

Ah, variance /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I just moved up limits and am actually in the black to start it off, please please please keep it up poker gods...

I ended the last limit in a downswing though, so I suppose it's only fair

Variance is an amzing thing! I'm now up 500BB over the last 4500 hands. Immediately following a 17K breakeven period.

Puts you through the meat grinder at times. For anybody living on the negative side of variance right now just hop over to the psych forum for a bit--reading stuff there usually helps me get back on track.

Good luck all. Its def a factor.

be sure to explain this to the latest HUSH heroes when they get run over in their next 25K hands after purporting to be god's gift to poker..they wont be so yappy soon. I've done 1.50 bb/100 after 30K at $5-10 6MAX. I'm crushing the $3-6 5MAX and 6MAX(3.25bb/100) -Paradise games are very good.

I've done +4.00bb/100 this month so far in $5-10 6MAX, last month I did +0.35 bb. I hate my $151 per 100 hand variance in $5-10 6MAX but I'm slowly playing more of the game. I dont relish getting stuck 50-70 bigbets which is so easy to do playing $5-10 6MAX- I like my earn to be smoother-I'm a wimp. But my $5-10 6MAX game is much improved and I do love to play the game..I just dont like the swings.

Another funky thing is that since I play a variety of games NLHE,PLHE,PLO and full/short LHE I never seem to be able to have a decent month at $5-10 Full and $5-10 6MAX at the same time. I'm currently in the middle of a deathstall of break even poker after 7K $5-10 Full hands after being a +2.25 bb/100 winner /images/graemlins/frown.gif Right now thu my best games purely on an hourly basis are $100 NL 6MAX and $3-6/$5-10 6MAX.

I'd like to move up to $10-20 6MAX sometime in the future but I wont even attempt it until I have a 2.50bb/100 or better earn on a minimum 100K hands at $5-10 6MAX-at my current langourous pace this seems way off but I really want to force myself to play more $5-10 6MAX.

With rakeback any decent player making a minimum 1.50 bb/100 is making ~22.50 cents per hand. 2K hands a day is $450.
