What is the best sitcom of all time?

If there is enough interest, this will be the nomination thread for an elimination tournament.

Animated ones count.

3. Cheers
4. South Park
5. The Dick Van Dyke Show

I'll throw some love to the classics. Night Court, Family Guy, and Sports Night get honorable mention from me, although Sports Night wasn't really a sitcom, but I need to defend it against the guy that compared it to That's My Bush. Seinfeld doesn't do it for me, I just don't find the cast very likeable. I've seen a couple of episodes of Arrested Development, and could take it or leave it. I don't watch sitcoms anymore, so I haven't seen most of the new shows.

The Dick Van Dyke show! An all time favorite.

A great sitcom has to be one that you can watch over and over and still laugh. That is my measure. For people who are fans of Curb Your Enthusiasm I find that it is funny the first time around but not so much on the reruns. I'm not sure why this is true. Seinfeld on the other hand is funny even after the fifth time watching the same damn episode.

(Whoever nominated Scrubs, good call. )

I cant really put any US comedy on my list maybe the Simpsons and South Park apart from that some of them can be amusing but not laugh out loud funny.

Mine

1 Fawlty Towers
2 Blackadder 2/3/4/1
3 The Office
4 Phoenix Knights
5 Red Dwarf (first few series went [censored] after that)
6 One Foot in the Grave

Have to add men behaving Badly, the young ones, early allo allo, and even some of the classics like some mothers, dads army, are you being served etc etc. On top of that stuff like Alan Partridge, League of Gentlemen, some of Fools and Horses and a few others that are far better than most mainstream US stuff.

A lot of the above except red dwarf have in common that they only went on a couple of series before being killed off and are all the better for it. The other advantage UK comedy has over US is that it tends to be 2-3 writers do the whole thing as I understand US stuff is done by huge writing teams.

I do think the US does modern drama better than the UK but comedy we have got it covered.

Good one! I don't think it quite measures up to the Simpsons and Seinfeld, but worth mention.

On what planet is "Miami Vice" considered a sitcom?

I'm throwing King of the Hill in there too on the animated side.

Dream On and Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman were both underrated.

I think I'm the only person on the planet (or, in OOT which pretty much includes all opinions that matter) that thinks Sienfeld blows. It's stupid and boring.

Also, I'm surprised that Sanford and Son hasn't been mentioned. The theme song alone makes it gold.

Good call on Sanford and Son. Another great sitcom with another great themesong, I nominate the Dukes of Hazzard.

Yee-ha!

Replace Soap with Cheers and Sienfeld with, oh, I don't know...My Two Dads? Perfect Strangers? Charles in Charge? anything? and you have yourself one hell of a list.

I love King of the Hill

Bobby: Dad can we get a new TV
Hank: Bobby, America, the greatest country in the world, doesn't make TV's anymore
Bobby: Why can't we get a Japanese one?
Hank: Bobby go to your room!

I expect it to go down in flames with this crowd, but let's throw The Cosby Show in there too.

This show is incredibly well done, and it accomplished everything it set out to do, while staying within the confines of the morals and values of the creators. Almost every episode was well put together and very funny. It defintely deserves a nomination.

Cheers has always been my favorite by far. I think I like a character driven show over gag driven show, although I can understand why Seinfeld would dominate this discussion.
