View Full Version : Defending against PVS

I had a note on the BB that he makes very small raises and even miniraises with his monsters. Of course this smells a lot like PVS, but with what range would you call? (Of course this is very hypothetical, because you would raise preflop with a lot of those hands)

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t50 (7 handed) converter (http://www.selachian.com/tools/bisonconverter/hhconverter.cgi)

CO (t800)
Button (t860)
Hero (t1005)
BB (t1785)
UTG (t695)
MP1 (t745)
MP2 (t4110)

Preflop: Hero is SB with J/images/graemlins/heart.gif, A/images/graemlins/heart.gif.
2 folds, MP2 calls t50, 2 folds, Hero completes, BB raises to t1785 (All-In), MP2 folds, Hero ??

Raise rather than limp?

No, you are risking too much.

With what range would you call then?

AK, AA-QQ, if the person is not a solid player or if I've seen them doing this move before, then maybe AQ and JJ. I guess that's what makes PVS cool, because there aren't very many hands you'd limp with then call a giant raise.

With one and a half limpers, easy fold. With three and a half, I call this automatically. Do you see why?

It is too early to call w/ AJ unless you have a good read that villain is loose/maniac. Call w/ AA-QQ, AK only.

That is very annoying. Do you see why?

Probably TT, AK

I like not giving out straight answers sometimes because it makes people think about hands. Also, it's early and I'm sleepy but have to sit in class so I feel like being slightly obnoxious. Do you see why?

With only 1 limper there is less incentive to PVS, so they are probably doing this with a good hand.

I don't know how important it is, but I think that folding JJ here would be passing up a good chance to get a lot of chips. Then again, I wouldn't have limped JJ to begin with.

I MIGHT call here with AK. Otherwise, whatever your allin typical calling hands is correct. I typically see this push move here with AQ+, and any pair (except top pairs - who want action).

I hate calling my stack off here, you have 50 chips in this pot (which doesn't even matter) so no point in going and busting out here when you aren't getting any odds.

I call here with QQ-AA.

I was thinking that I might call here with AK but there is too good of a chance of him having 88-JJ IMO, or even 2 random rag cards. I think hero has too big of a stack for it.

Of course if I raised from the sb to 150-200 with AK and he pushed I'd be far more inclined to call but I hate getting involved in big pots out of position on PP with AK.
