View Full Version : Something for nothing....the nads some people have.

1) While working the floor last night, a guy I have never seen before comes walking in, beelines toward me and rudely says "If you comp me dinner I'll get in that game." While feeling like I'm getting blackmailed I say "Well, we comp players depending on how long they play...". He interrupts and says he wants dinner comped immediately. Annoyed, I say "I can't do that." He mills around for 10 minutes or so and walks out. Meanwhile all of our tables were full and several names were on the board. /images/graemlins/confused.gif

2) While signing up folks for a "freeroll" tourney, I had a guy freak out on me because "the blinds go up too fast and we start with too few chips". He was very upset. It's a FREE tourney for Christ's sake - the buy in is $0.00! Yet he complains. /images/graemlins/confused.gif

Both incidents just made me chuckle. While most players are pretty cool, it's amazing the nads that some people have. Sometimes I feel like using Al's trademark "kick them in the nuts" move, but it's his move. I need to find one of my own. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm writing tickets in the racebook. Supervisor tells me, "See that guy in the grey windbreaker who just walked in? Watch him. He's going to go around and scoop up some old discarded tickets, then come here and ask for some drink tickets." Sure enough, the guy was roaming through the racebook, picking up old tickets, scratch sheets, tucking a used Racing Form under his arm--and heading for my window.

My boss stood nearby, but pretended to be busy with something else. As soon as the bum started to ask for some drink tickets, my boss was right there before the bum had finished making his request.

"We comp drinks for the players," my boss told him. Of course, the bum waved all the tickets he had "bought" over the course of the afternoon.

My boss took one of the tickets out of Bum's hand and looked at it. "Seventh race at Santa Anita. It just finished. Which horse did you bet?"

The bum dropped an F-bomb as he left.

on my second trip to Vegas, I was playing 6/12 Holdem at the Mirage from 1-5am -

there was a guy who might remind you of a bum or an Ellix Powers - older black gentleman - but I think he had been playing up on the higher chip platform games - sort of a shabby suit, but not too shabby -

come 3am he's hanging out at an empty table, still bumming drinks from the waitress, and reading or hanging out like he was waiting for a new game to start..

It occured to me I could be homeless, play some poker, and drink all night for free if I was at the Mirage - In fact, I don't understand how any decent 2+2'er could even have a bar tab - simply grab a rack of blue, sit down, play uber tight at 1/2 NL, and drink the free whiskeys....

(part of my love for the MGM room goes past just the games/people - they have Jameson whiskey there) -

anyways, back to the Mirage, I don't know if that is normal or not, but he asked for a double and they brought it to him - I later found out he might have been waiting for those sandwiches they bring out at 5-6am. pretty darned interesting, to say the least...

I helped myself to a couple of the Mirage dinner comps, but in both cases I had been there for hrs and in one case, I still ended up paying 10 bucks for the damned buffet - LOL

Canterbury gives you nothing except once in a great, great while, a manager might give you a card for free Valet parking... - to the point that the first time I went to Vegas I asked the waitress how much the drink was - (I later immortalized that incident in a song I wrote - LOL) - -

oh wait, nevermind, Canterbury gives free pop - but with tips, nothing is free.

I was at the Taj last weekend playing with a regular next to me and some old guy came up and said hi to him. the regular told me the guy comes in every day and plunks his chips down at a 1-5 stud table and basically never plays. he just walks around for 8 hours, playing a hand every hour or so to keep his seat.
he does this all just to collect the 50 cents an hour in comps!
apparently a couple months ago they caught on to him and pulled tape on him one day and saw he didnt play a hand the whole day and they confiscated 200 dollars of his comp money.....yet he still does it!

I think I'd rather work at Mcdonalds and get minimum wage then walk around for hours getting .50 in comps.

THey spend money for their entertainment. It isn't really the comps they want, it is something for them to DO instead of sitting at home waiting to die. A lot of small daytime games feature players that would sit and talk and not play any poker if they had a way to get the 8 other players to sit around a table and talk to them.

I will be in Vegas next weekend. I fully expect you to comp all my meals for the 6 days I am in town. If I like the food then I will consider playing a couple hands in your poker room. 2-4 only though. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Deal????

Anyone who sits down with a rack of blue ($1 chips) at 1/2 NL should be flogged, and then promptly kicked in the nuts.

I had some douchebag do this at Wynn the first and only time I played there. Then he'd procede to count them one at a time. Dealer and I look at each other and the dealer says "man you're killing this table with them blues" (meaning it was taking forever to play a hand). Considering this guy was a calling station, it was an every hand thing. The guy says "but blue is lucky for me". I wanted to smack the dumb schmuck.

woops, went off on a tangent there!!! thread hijacking is immenant!

In my experience, dealers who have just been promoted to floormen have very poor people skills. I think it's because dealers put up with so much sht from the players. Unfortunately, people skill is probably the most important skill for any floorman to have. The thing you have to remember is that the card players and gamblers are customers and thus demand a bit of ass kissing respect on your part.

It's not clear to me why you were annoyed when the customer asked to get his meal comped. He probably pays alot of money to play at the casino. He was asking for a deal and you are the one in charge of deals. He made an offer. You can accept or decline and it's your job to do make that decision AND be nice to the customer. I really don't understand why you felt blackmailed. Did he threaten your family or something?

I think his point was that the guy wanted to be comped specifically for playing in a "Free Roll". I dont think he felt threatened at all.

For certain people, you can go ahead and use my patented "kick them in the nuts" move. I'm sure you know which ones I'd give you the OK for.

Here's one, not poker but still the same...

I was playing $2 craps at boulder one night, and I had thrown a point of six. The table was mostly empty, and I was the only one at my end. I should note that I had a nice cold beer to keep me company, and I was quite happy to stand there and toss the dice all alone.

Then this schmuckola comes up. He tries to place $75 on the pass line. The base dealer pushes back his bet and says "sir, there's a point already." So this schmuck says "$25 hard eight."

I then procede to roll eight, the hard way. Schmuck collects $225, and still up on his hard eight.

Next, this schmuck tries once again to place $75 on the pass line. AGAIN the base dealer says to him "sir, there's already a point, the point is six." Dealer again pushes back the bet. Note that at this time, the come box has plenty of open space in it, available for anyone to use.

I roll another hard eight. Schmuck collects another $225.

Now the schmuck puts up his $75 for a THIRD time on the pass line. Note the point is still six. I then procede to seven-out, line away.

Now the schmuck has a friggin' COW because he was s'poseda win on the seven. The friggin' box man is so annoyed he finally relents and lets the schmuck take his bet back (I would NOT have let him have it back, BTW).

Now the schmuck gets MAD at the boxman! He takes his winnings and storms off in a huff.

Someone please HOLD this schmuck so I can kick him in the nuts several times.

The valet passes at Canterbury are freely given by any floor to any player. Just ask.

The Krispy Kremes at 5:00 am are 100% free.

Soft drinks are free (plus tip).

Drinks cost money. That sucks, not because I drink, but because I like other people to drink.

I'd let you kick me in the nuts, but life is already taking is turn - get in line behind him -

A few good points here for sure. Some floor folks are not "people persons".

...card players and gamblers are customers and thus demand a bit of ass kissing respect on your part.
Respect, yes. Ass kissing? OK...a bit. But comps come AFTER you play - at least for a little while - as a sort of reward. Getting dinner for free BEFORE ever playing is not happening.

It's not clear to me why you were annoyed...
He was rude and wanted something for nothing, which always bugs me. I wasn't rude back to him. I just politely said "I can't do that" after he cut me off mid-sentence (another thing that really bugs me) and demanded a free dinner immediately.

He probably pays alot of money to play at the casino.
Like I wrote in the OP, I never saw this guy before. Maybe he's a slot player...fine. Ask the slot club for comps if that's the case.

He made an offer. You can accept or decline and it's your job to do make that decision AND be nice to the customer.
I declined and I was nice. He was rude and demanding.

I really don't understand why you felt blackmailed.
He said " If you comp me dinner, I'll get into that game". He din't say "Will you comp me dinner if I play here for a while?" See the difference? If he said the latter, I would have said "Sure. What game are you interested in playing?". But he cut me off and made his demand before I could even explain to him how we comp people.

Customers are expected to respect the floormen as well.
