Hey, a relative of mine is putting in a new home theater and asked me for some help picking the screen. Seeing as I know little about the market I'm turning to you good Ootiots for help.

The only needed features are that it fit inside a compartment 45 inches wide and is plasma, ie, less than 6 or so inches thick.

The local cable company (time warner) offers Hi-definition service, so that is an option, although not a necessity. However, the project is intended to last, so a model that could still be in use in 15 years is preferable. He watches a lot of movies too, so I think he would lean towards a letterbox aspect ratio.

Thanks!

Is plasma a constraint? You can get some fairly large LCDs and some pretty thin projection TV's.

It hardly makes any sense to get an SDTV nowadays. Standard def. broadcasts are going to cease in not too much time. Unless he's planning on replacing his set within < 3 years time, I'd get an HDTV. Also, a number of the smaller plasma sets aren't true HDTVs. They're called something like EDTVs, and they have a lower resolution than HDTVs. I wouldn't spend my money on any of those, either.

I look at www.extremetech.com (http://www.extremetech.com) for a lot of my computer hardware buying decisions, and they have a section on HDTVs. They wrote out a buying guide with several recommended models here. (http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,1736620,00.asp)
