View Full Version : I think I know what kind of comp/setup I'm getting--comments?

I'm thinking of an HP. It has the 7200 RPM drive, 3200 something or other, 1 gig of memory, CD/DVD burner (nice), etc. All the stuff I need to ensure no slowdown when I eventually 8 table and surf the web simuletaneously.

A vid card.

Two 19" Insignia CRT monitors (will add a third later) with 1600X1200 pixel thingies.

Cost:

Comp $800
Monitors $130 each
Video card $135
Surge protection/internet security package $125

~$1320

Whaddya think?

Go to the "Computer Technical Help" forum, NOOBFISH. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sounds like a good deal... I like the prices on those monitors.

EDIT: The "surge/security" package sounds a little on the unneccesary side. You can buy a virus scanner for ~50 and install free spyware software. Hell, you could use AVG Free Version for viruses. IF they have a guarantee or something with that package it's a better deal... something like "if your pc is hacked or scumware infested, we'll give you a new pc and a handjob."

Hahah.

Okay, I'll repost this there.

Yeah, the monitors are cheap. They're not top of the line, but since I don't play video games, I'm not real concerned.

Why not get a monitor that goes up to 2048x1536?

Can you six table these or something? What kind of price am I looking at there for a CRT?

I don't have one yet, but I'm going to be buying one soon. I believe it's just about the right size to 6 table with little or no overlap. They are around $450.

There's some overlap, and it can be a little annoying. If you can get two that do 1600x1200 for the same price (or a little more) than one that does 2k x 1.5k, it's better.

What do you think of my deal?

You could go a little cheaper on the video card if you're not planning on playing any games. As far as I know either one of these would work fine for running 2 monitors -- which one depends on if you have an AGP or PCI express slot for video:

AGP card (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102546)

or PCI express card (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814121538)

How's everything else look? I'm not getting ripped off, am I?

Bump.

Hello?

Seems fine. I think it's better to four-table on 1600*1200 than sixtable at an insane resolution. Remember you will have eye strain if the tables are too small.

And I hope you have made sure your video card can handle several monitors.

Yeah, it can handle two. I'm going to have to add a video card for the third monitor, when that happens.

I'll have a hilariously huge setup with 3 CRT monitors. Heh. But I've got the space.

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

It is also possible that you will find that 8-tabling is enough.

Of course it is always nice to have some space for browsing while playing. I have a tv tuner card in my computer so I can watch TV while playing. Which is insanely +EV.

Well, the third monitor would be for surfing. I already have a television in my poker room. And a DVD player. And a VCR. And cable on demand. And a 51 disc stereo.

I need lots of stuff going on to keep interested, see. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

What kind of vid card? Is the "3200 something or other" an intel pentium?

I dunno. I haven't decided yet. I've looked at a couple.

1600x1200 on a 19" CRT looks quite awful in my experience.

Seriously consider going for a bigger monitor.

It's been said before, but I think it deserves repeating: don't get the internet security/etc package.

Do you have any more specifications on it?
CPU/motherboard/etc?

What looks awful? I saw the monitor in use. It looked fine.

No. I should have written that stuff down.

CRT monitors side by side will create interence. One monitor will have a little line (or lines) moving from top to bottom, and the other will have it moving from bottom to top. The further apart they are, the less interence, if you leave a gap wide enough to comfortable to place a beer between them without your fingers or back of hand touching the monitors, you're probably good.

As per security, another poster suggested buying a cheap anti-virus software, then plug the other gaps with freeware/shareware. I personally use a router (http://www.dlink.com/products/?model=DI-704P) with hardware firewall. This doesn't stop you from downloading viruses from dishonest sources, so I use a freeware or shareware app now and then to scan for viruses/spyware.

Unless you are interested in 3D gaming at high-res with great FPS, any current computer model will be more than effective to deliver you a great poker/mp3/movie download box.

my 2 cents.
