View Full Version : Will upgrading help much?

I have a fairly new Dell laptop 2.4ghz with 500mb of ram.

When I run multiple programs, especially two systems with large databases, my computer lags, over heats, etc.

The high end desk top is only 3.6ghz. Is there enough performance improvement to justify upgrading now?

I know I can add another 500mb of ram, but that's about it.

As far as buying a system, what is the absolute best configuration for running multiple massive programs consecutivley? A dual processor? I would like to stick with Dell, anyone disagree?

Thanks

Push to a gig of RAM and clean all the spyware off your laptop, defrag, etc.

You don't need a new PC.

Your current desktop can likely hold up to 2G or RAM, that's where your performance is going to come from.

Dual processors are reserved for most servers, and unless you run these databases all the time, simultaneously for work or something, then you probably don't need anything fancy.

Thanks for the reply Ryan. I will look into more memory. My system is clean, I completely wipe it every 3-6 months. Just did one about a month ago.

I do run quite a few programs simultaneously, hopefully this will work for now.
