View Full Version : Do Bigger games = Bigger Fluctuations?

I was discussing this with someone who was of the opinion that bigger games (higher limits) should mean LESS volatility. He reasons that the game(s) play tighter which should decrease fluctuations.

My experiece has been exactly the opposite. My hourly standard deviation is one full big bet higher playing 20-40 hold'em than it is at 10-20 hold'em. I also seem to have much more severe swings at 20-40. I had attributed this to the fact that the games play more aggressive, but obviously another reason could be that I don't have as big of an edge.

So should I expect increased volatility? Or should I assume that I must not be playing as well and that these (unusual for me) swings are due to a lower hourly rate? I'd appreciate any input. Thanks.

Aggression of your opponents is a bigger cause for fluctuation than their looseness. So, you can expect bigger swings in bigger games.
