what's the best way to do it? i'm thinking some kind of home-based learning (cds, software, etc). a class of some sort is not out of the question, but i'd rather do it on my own time.

Rosetta Stone is by far the best language education software available. The American government uses it to train their consuls, ambassadors and other staff for foreign posts. And uhh...it's on bit-torrent.

Rosetta stone (http://www.rosettastone.com/ind/catalog?affiliate=google16)

I have the first 2 spansih ones of these. I've only done the first few lessons so far. I took 4 years in HS plus one semester in college so I haven't learned much, but it works for my Girlfriend. Very impressed with the product. If you put the effort in it should pay off for you.

Speaking of which we have been slacking and need to get on with more lessons.
