All Along the Watchtower has got to be a champ on that count.

I don't think Cash's redo of Hurt was as good as the original.

I don't think Take Me to the River was an original of The Talking Heads, and I think I heard the original and liked the Heads' version better.

Also, Ted Nugent did Cat Scratch Fever way better than the Pope.

"Hazy Shade of Winter" by Simon and Garfunkle, redone by The Bangles for the awesome 80's movie Less Than Zero.

Gary Jules's "Mad World" is far better than the Tears for Fears version. Also, Blind Melon did a cover of "Three is a Magic Number" which is incredible.

I disagree. Dylan's version is severely underrated. I like the Hendrix version, but they're both great music.

I don't give a [censored] what Lou Reed says. Nothing not done by VU will ever be better than something done by VU, whether it's a cover or not. VU is the best band evar.

The Unholy Trio did a cover of Bring the Noise which is far better than Public Enemy's. It doesn't happen often that the cover is better, I could only think of this one and Jimi's version of All Along the Watchtower.

This one stands out to me cause I was there on a beautiful summer afternoon in June of 92.

Neil's version might beat Jimi's.

With very, very few exceptions, any statement about music beginning with "Dave Matthews" and followed shortly by "better than", without an "is not" or some other negative before it, is absolutely painfully untrue.

I think it's a great song, but at some point delivery has to count for something, and I think it very clearly does in this case. I heard the Hendrix version for many years before I heard the Dylan one, and the Dylan one seemed like a flat out astonishing let-down after the Hendrix one. It's my favorite Hendrix song, take that how one might, and I think that song is a revelation when Jimmy does it. When Dylan does it, it's just Dylan on an especially intriguing song.

Reasonable men can differ, as they say. My opinion is that Hendrix version kicks the crap out of the Dylan one pretty severely.

I'll agree on that, but Prince's version of Kiss makes me want to stab my eyes with knitting needles.

I was driving in Kansas this past weekend and while scanning the FM band looking for anything but country stations. While going through this futile effort I came across Clint Black singing The Eagles "Desperado," and I actually found it better than the original.

Just a few off the top of my head:

Elvis Presley's cover of Carl Perkins' "Blue Suede Soes".

The Who's version of "Summertime Blues" (although the original is pretty good too).
