View Full Version : heads up vs. hellmuth: my 10 minutes of fame

Warning: Long...If you don't feel like reading, skip to the pics!

So I'm in Vegas this weekend and entered my first ever WSOP event, the $1500 NLHE shootout. The shootout event is basically a series of 1 table satelites.

To start the tounament only 9 players sat down at my table none of which i recognized. About an hour into the tounament, Phil Hellmuth shows up and takes his seat.

I'm ashamed to say, this was a serious thrill for me. I've been watching and reading about hellmuth for many years, and now he's at my table. Three hands after phil sits down, a player calls his raise with J-10 off, flops the nuts, and takes 2/3 of Phil's chips. Phil immediately got steamed and i was loving it. He started berating the player for calling his raise and made several "9 bracelet" references. The camera's show up to record the moment and Phil definitly picks up the act for their benefit. He's certainly a performer.

About an hour later several players including phil limp to my big blind and i decide the time is right to make a move. I make a big raise which nobody calls and show the table my J-3 offsuit.

Phil: Nice play, but you should not of shown that
Me: Oh, why not?
Phil: now i know what you look like when you bluff
Me (thinking to myself): he's got a point!

about 10 minutes later i force Phil to make a big laydown (which he shows) when a flush card comes. I show my semibluff (i had a strait draw).

Phil: Keep doing that, you're going to double me up soon

Me: But i thought you knew what i looked like when i was bluffing. You should have doubled up right there.

Phil: I'm just waiting for the right time. You play so bad i can wait until i'm a 90:10 favorite

Me: Thanks, please keep waiting

Anyway, phil and i go on like this for hours and our table draws quite a crowd. Phil is low on chips just about the entire time so the ESPN cameras are filming to see what he does when he busts out.

4 hours into the tounament we're heads up and i have phil outchipped 12.5k - 2.5k. We take a break and 50 people stop me on the way to the restroom to wish me good luck, tell me how much they dislike phil's antics, etc. It's truly my 10 minutes of fame.

When we come back from break the ESPN cameras are rolling and i'm feeling pretty good about my chances. About 10 minutes in, i make a flush when Phil makes a straight and i bust him. Phil stands up, mumbles to himself for a while, shakes my hand, and storms off. While i'm waiting for the floor, i talk to the crowd for a while and do a brief interview for the ESPN people.

For the record, let me state that i sincerly enjoyed Phil's company at the table. Several times he assured me that his comments were nothing personal and I said the same back to him. All the needling was in good fun. Phil played great making it to the final two without really making any hands. I was very lucky to get as far as i did and ran very well.

Unfortunately, i was an early bust out in round 2 when i got my money in on a coin flip. But i did cash in my 1st world series event and beat Hellmuth heads up. What an experience!

Nice report and congratulations!

But when you showed him the bluff, you should have also said, "you make that call, you bust me." TILT-STYLE!

Thanks...I'm not sure how much, if any of it will make it to TV. this was just the 1st round of a small event and they could not see any of our hole cards. ESPN is taking thousands of hours of coverage!

Is anybody else having problems with the pictures? They work for me.

You have them stored in your temp files. For the rest of us, there's something wrong with the Geocities server, so we can't load them.

Excellent work man.

One question - How did a 1-Table tourney take over 4 hours? How many chips and what were blinds/levels like?

I've played many of those kind of tournaments, and 2 hours would be a real long time if it ever happened.

Grivan

1500 starting chips. 60 minute levels.

25-25
25-50
50-100
100-200

were the first 4 levels... I think antes got added after that. I busted in level 4 so that is where I stoped paying attention.

i think we already covered this in the other thread.

You ARE aware that the 2005 WSOP is currently taking place don't you?

There is more than just the 'main-event' there.
This was in one of the preliminary events at the WSOP.

Aggie - nice story.
I would seriously have considered not shaking his hand after he pulled his whole 'you are such a horrible player' routine.
Seems that every time he shakes a player's and he immediately goes off about how terrible they are so I don't consider his hand-shakes to be a gesture of good sportsmanship in the least.
Since he's already behaved like a bad sport around me I would feel zero obligation to shake his hand.

I understand that you were just messing around with him though and this whole hand-shake thing is something I have already thought about in advance (for whatever demente reason....I guess it's just from seeing all these other people shake his hand on TV and me thinking "No way would I shake that dick's hand if he did that around me.")

I also would have told him, "If luck weren't involved I guess you'd win every one Phil" and probably would have repeated it about 17 times.

As Paul Phillips (I think it was him) so eloquently put in the 2004 WSOP, Phil's like a 9 year old. You wouldn't get angry at something a 9 year old said, would you?

I think his antics are worse than what I would expect of any 9-year old.
"I'm so much better than you...blah blah blah."

If I had a 9-year-old who threw over a chair or 'performed' by falling on the floor after a bad-beat then we would have a nice little talk about how the other players are trying to win too and we need ot behave better in public when things don't go our way.

I played little-league baseball as a kid.
When I was in college I umpired LL-baseball for $10/game in the summers.
These kids were mostly 10-12 but I don't seem to remember any of them behaving THAT badly.
I also don't remember the kids in the National Spelling Bee behaving quite so badly either. High pressure (probably kind of similar to WSOP) and on TV. Obvious disappointment in there and a few tears shed as well.

but I think most of your typical 9-year-olds behave better than Phil.

And whether Phil really does behave like a 9-year-old or not doesn't mean he HAS to. He's an adult and DOES have the ability to compose himself in public.
I don't think there is much of an excuse for the way he acts (says the guy who will probably cry like a baby when his AA gets busted costing him a shot at making the money).

60 minute levels....1500 chips

25-25 and escalating from there.....My tale was right in the middle in terms of when the 78 original tables finished

aggie

I really don't think Phil meant any harm....Yes, he's probably less mature than a typical 9 year old in some respects.

We shook hands during the match (at the 2nd break) and Phil said something to the effect of "this is quite a battle we have going here"....I told him it was my 1st wsop event and it was an honor playing with him...and that i was enjoying the chat....

Anyhow, Phil's i believe phil talks for 3 reasons:

1. he loves hearing himself
2. he is a showman and loves putting on an act for the crowd. As soon as the cameras showed up, phil went to a whole new level
3. he wants to intimidate his opponents into playing passive against him
