Recently I've been trying to loosen up a bit in the early levels in hopes of building a large stack. Part of this involves calling raises with pocket pairs for set value. Although appropriate in some spots, it feels like I'm just throwing away chips most of the time. That being said, what do you do in this spot? Party 20+2, one of the first hands so no reads yet.

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t15 (10 handed) converter (http://www.selachian.com/tools/bisonconverter/hhconverter.cgi)

MP2 (t785)
MP3 (t790)
CO (t705)
Button (t685)
Hero (t785)
BB (t1035)
UTG (t830)
UTG+1 (t800)
UTG+2 (t785)
MP1 (t800)

Preflop: Hero is SB with 8/images/graemlins/diamond.gif, 8/images/graemlins/club.gif.
UTG calls t15, <font color="#666666">1 fold</font>, <font color="#CC3333">UTG+2 raises to t60</font>, <font color="#666666">4 folds</font>, Button calls t60, Hero ?

I'd fold here. I might call a 3x raise, but with your position it's still probably -EV since you won't be able to win this pot without improving.

Easy easy call, gamble with pocket pairs as much as possible at level 1 as long as its reasonable (unreasonable would be 10% of your stack OOP etc.)

I fold here. I don't want to put in this large a % of my stack here, although it's probably not terrible to do so.

Thanks for all of your comments. I think I'll lay off calling in these spots from now on. I noticed that I had been getting into the later levels with little fold equity, and this is probably the biggest reason why. Thanks for your input.

huh? This is an easy call for me. If you nail your set you can often extract more than enough to make up for the odds you are getting.

He already has 10 chips committed and it looks like 5 way action with a pocket pair. I guess it depends on preference on how the first few levels are played. I'd junk AQ-2,AJs-2,KQs,55-22 but a mid pair I find very hard to fold where all I need to do is catch one person with a 2nd best hand.

*in the dark, critique welcome*

With the decent odds you're getting I call this to see the flop - if it is reraised preflop after my call I fold, and remember the players involved for future info...

so I should cold call raises with 95o because if I nail my 2 pair I can often extract more than enough to make up for the odds I am getting?
