So me and my roommate are walking through Walmart today where we come across this girl standing behind this cheap blackjack table. She says, "Hey, you guys want to take the Degree poker challenge?" We figure, what the hell we have nothing better to do.

On this table, there are a bunch of sticks of deodorant and a bunch of poker chips. She explains that if we are able to stack the chips higher than the sticks of deodorant in under 30 seconds we will win a prize.

So we each do this in about 10 seconds and of course win the prizes. A few sampler size deodorants and some coasters. The coasters came in a pack of two each with “DEGREE IS FOR MEN WHO TAKE RISKS. GO ALL IN.” on the front. On the back one has some sort of strategy for hold em and the other one has something for stud.

“TEXAS HOLD ‘EM

No risk, no reward. Play your quick high pairs and very strong hands before the flop.

Be an In-Action Hero: remember that unconnected cards of medium and low value are usually worthless.

Straighten up! Don’t draw to the low end of both ends of a straight.

Keep your hands in your head. Learn all the possible hand combinations.

Play the numbers. Flops like 6,7,8 can work out to be a good straight.”

“SEVEN-CARD STUD

Don’t be a mama’s boy: bet on a big pair…unless another player is betting aggressively (figure it out, chief).

If another player’s exposed cards beat your entire hand, fold faster than a cheap table.

Don’t bet all your money on losing hands. Take action: do nothing.

We’ll give it to ya straight: Target a straight only if other players don’t hold the cards you need.”

Silly, but, if you've ever been in a B&M cardroom, handing out Degree to the players can't possibly be a bad thing. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Some of that advice is good.
