View Full Version : Cash on an Airplane

10-03-2001, 12:14 PM
This topic was posted a few months ago but I can't find it. I'm going to a tournament in a few weeks and would like to know how much cash I can take on the airplane? (I can't wire the money or bring a bank check)

There's no specific rule for carrying cash on domestic flights. If you go overseas, you have to declare carrying over 10k. The danger is that the phony drug war has made everyone guilty until proven innocent and government employees have been known to seize large amounts of cash and tell you to prove it _isn't_ drug money. Someone here said that carrying $10,000 in hundreds would set off the airport metal detectors because of the tiny metal strips. This is not true I can attest. If you're carrying an absurd amount of money, you might want to look into a money belt. And instead of wiring or bank checks have you looked into AAA traveler's checks?

I can also confirm that over $10k won't set off the detectors. Have you ever used traveler's checks? Do the cardrooms accept them easily?

From what I understand, if you set off the metal detector, you will be searched and possibly patted down. I wouldn't want to take a chance of having a wad siezed, so I think it would be best to use a money belt and make sure you have absolutely no metal at all on your person. Put it all in your bag, and if you wear glasses, put them in the bowl that you hand to the gaurd.

I was just reminded that since security has been tightened, the metal detectors have been turned up so they detect smaller metal items (such as nail clippers). I haven't tried to carry a large amount of cash through them since this change.

Maybe JG will take a trip real soon and report back to us how it went.

I just do not like to have that much cash on my person....so if I run short I go to a local bank and get cash on my credit card. yes, there is a fee, but worth it to me to do it that way.

Heh, I was already getting tired of flying to LA. Increased airport annoyance is enough to push me over into taking the pickup truck down I-10. Next trip probably the Commerce in Feb.

Here's an email I received yesterday.

Thank you for your interest in the brand new Crowne Plaza Hotel at Commerce Casino due to open end of October 2001. Please call our hotel reservation agent at (323) 728-3600 for availability & rates. Thank you

Sinerely,

Lily Chang

I would guess the rates will start at $100+.

Now, what about the traveler's checks?

I walked in yesterday to see how things look. Looks like they're getting pretty close.

Inside, it is easily the ugliest building in the history of the planet. The casino section looks like it was designed by the firm of P.T.Barnum and Salvador Dali. The statues look like they came off of an old merry-go-round.

However, if the tables are further apart and it is not as frigid as the old card room, all is OK by me.

you can get a debit card thru many banks or stock brokerages. with these the money comes right out of your account. visa will give 5,000 a day cash to you at most any bank with one of these cards with absolutely no fees as it comes out of your account.

Traveler's checks is probably the way. Will this leave a trail?

I might try this next time. A couple of problems are possible, though. One is that when you take more than $3000 cash, they fill out a form on you. Even if you take less, they can fill out a suspicious cash transaction form. And if you take more than $10,000 in a week, they will definitely notify the IRS.

Another is that not all banks will do this since you don't have an account with them. Sometimes on my extended trips when I am running good, I take cash and buy cashiers checks and send them to my bank. I usually have a hard time finding a bank that will sell them to me since I don't have an account there.

when its your own oney that you have in your account it doesnt matter who they notify. plus the 3000 limit on notification stays in house until it reaches 10,000+ in 24 period. thats the law.

sure they can put in a suspicious notice or something but this is money directly out of your account.

ive found most all banks will do this as its a visa transaction and not a bank account one. thoise that do must do it as a requirement of the visa contracts.
