View Full Version : How much to tip the delivery guy?

So I am getting a mattress, boxspring, and a dresser delivered to my apt. They are delivering directly to my room. Total cost is probably around $500-600. How much should I tip the delivery guy if anything at all? What if there are 2 or 3?

Michael Davis

$20

If there are 3, I assume you would just give them $20 to split amongst themselves? Also, would the tip change depending on whether they just leave it outside my room, or put it exactly where I want inside my room?

I think it depends. If I have to pay for the delivery (as I usually do with furniture), I generally don't tip, since the charge is something like $50 already. However, if you need something else moved in your house, a $20 bill can work wonders. (We had a bookshelf delivered the other day, and the guys jumped at the chance to move a very heavy cabinet upstairs for $20.)

There was some ridiculous delivery charge like $175. This includes delivery to my room. So do I tip, no, what if there are 3?

$175 delivery charge? For a mattress, box spring and dresser? Dear God.

I wouldn't tip when I'm paying that much. Maybe that makes me a cheapskate, I don't know. But that seems pretty damn steep to me.

Say you order chinese or a pizza. The bill comes out to $10.83. Do you seriously give the guy a $20 and wait for him to fumble through his pockets, and give you $9.17 in change?

Bingo! I tip like mad in most of the usual cases (servers, bartenders, pizza guys) but I've never tipped a furniture delivery crew.

I have experience in a similar industry. The people delivering your stuff get $8/hr. The 175 does not go to them. This is dificult manual labor, I would give them $100-$150 to split,$33-$50 each. $20 is on the low end of what they will recieve from most people

i'm gonna let you all in on a little secret. none of us tip to make the recipient happy, ultimately we do it because it makes us happy (which may be because seeing the recipient happy makes us happy)

so, tip what you feel like, whatever makes you happiest

With a ridiculous delivery charge like that, I would expect one of the delivery guys to be a woman with huge tits coming over to give me a hummer. Don't you have a friend with a pickup truck?

I would definitely tip if there was no charge, but you will only get that from a pretty cool store. Same thing if you get a good mover who gives you a good deal and the help is good. If you don't want to tip a lot (more than 5 bucks a head) I would have some cold ones around or something. Having done this exact job, a little consideration goes a loooong way.

Wow. You totally ignored my post about tipping baggage handlers in airports. I guess you do like sitting in the airport for 6 hours waiting to find out that your luggage is in a city you've never been in halfway across the country.

I don't use the queerbag curbside crap. Plus, I lump them in with bellboys anyway. It's the same thing. Also, I've only once had an airline misplace my luggage and it didn't have anything to do with tipping the curbside guys.

Frankly, the whole thing about if you don't tip me, I'm going to do something bad to your stuff is incredibly moronic and childish. Do your [censored] job and the tip is for good service.

I'm not a cheap guy and I tip well, but the whole thing is getting out of hand. A tip is supposed to be supplemental and a show of appreciation for a job well-done, not an entitlement.

I had the same stuff delivered recently and the delivery charge was $60. I didnt want to tip because of the charge, but the guys (2 of them) came in assembled all the furniture in the room offered suggestions and moved and removed the stuff where we wanted it. One of the guys was really nice so we tipped them $20 (to split). Plus they took away all the plastic and garbage that came with the stuff.

Wow, that delivery charge is nuts.

Mine was $90.

I had over $1700 worth of stuff. Box, mattress, bed frame, dresser, night stand.

I didn't know if I had to tip and by the time I had come back to the room after they had set it up where I wanted (angle and such) and cleaned up they had run out the door.

I did find out later that they had chipped a part of the bed frame which I will be getting replaced free of charge (still pretty big mistake IMO since they should have checked it out before giving me it).

I didn't even think to tip though. I use to be a huge tipper but now I tip well for good service instead of just expected by society.
