can someone explain the concept of isolation raises to me, when to use them. Do they occur both preflop and postflop?

thanks!

Its a pre-flop play to get HU with a loose raiser. If you have, say, a mid PP, it plays better HU. If you have an ace mid kicker, it plays better HU and your 3-bet could get a hand like AT or AJ to fold.

You can also isolate loose limpers too. Same thinking applies.

I wouldn't advise trying to isolate loose 3-bettors /images/graemlins/grin.gif

this means that I can afford to raise with a weaker hand as long as I am to the left of a loose raiser and think I can get it HU...

is this correct?

So long as the you think your hand is best. EG, you don't want to iso a raiser with a hand like QJs because you have little high card value and you can't win unless you hit. You want showdown-able hands: aces, pairs.
